Got the Kef LS50 Meta today and... @Tephnos you were close on the mark. Whilst the overall sound and stereo surround is really excellent, I'm not hearing £600 extra in improvements. Couple that with the deep bass notes like the bank scene in The Dark Knight being just less cinematic I've decided to return them and keep my Q300s. LS50s are smaller too, both cabinet sizes and main driver size so that probably explains why I prefer my old ones. Front firing bass port also makes a noticeable difference.

All in all, similar "sound", just the old speakers sound better because there's more sound to go round. Oh and over £600 cheaper

Diminishing returns 100% in this case!

Yep, can't beat physics after all! :D

I think I might just eventually go endgame on Genelec Ones. They don't look as 'nice' as KEF, but technical wise they're the kings - plus they have their own inbuilt room correction software without the lag of Dirac Live and such, so it is also workable for gaming.

Also, I'll mention that I tried R300s after the LS50s... these are NOT a good speaker for having at desk ranges. The bass driver is very overpowering when so close! It was nice, but damn that bass rumbled through everything else! They were also very, very big. The treble from the tweeter though, it gave me shivers. The midrange not having to deal with the bass notes gave that extra clarity that just made high notes 'sparkle' more. An excellent speaker for sure.

R3 not ideal for nearfield desktop usage then by the sounds of it, makes perfect sense given their size. I think I will definitely just keep the Q200s and if a used pair come up cheap one day I will buy them and keep the drivers out as you keep mentioning the one little dent in mine :p

I'm currently listening to Nirvana's Lake of fire (MTV Unplugged in New York) and the strings, the strings do funny things to my senses. Q300s are gonna stay and I'll use the money saved later in the year to get a 34" OLED monitor when they're out.

P.S. those Genelacs are fugly, no offence :D

The Genelecs aren't the prettiest indeed. You can at least get a black finish of them and they're not nearly as bad then! It's just the nature of the cast aluminium they're made from. It allows you to maximise sound quality in the thinnest enclosure possible. They're definitely an aesthetic that grows on you over time though, as I tried some 8030c's at one point and ended up growing to like their egg shape :D

And yes I will forever remind you about that dent until it has been fixed! I'd never get over it!

For desktop use you are better to add a sub to the LS50s, I run them this way and they sound superb it's not hugely expensive sub either a BK XLS200 I got it off the ebay store where they say they are marked etc but it was as new.

The LS50s also take a 20-30 hours to loosen up so I wouldn't write them off after a days use.

The LS50 Meta is supposed to be a bit more improved in these areas than the LS50 but I've never heard the LS50 so cannot compare so only had reviews to go by!

The bass of the Meta though was nice and tight but just not as deep punching as the Q300. I know it's worth running speakers in but generally I know if I'll like speakers in the first few hours based on past experiences, plus as above, there's physically no way a smaller driver and cabinet can produce sound on par with a bigger driver and cabinet in those areas. For some reason I thought they were similar in size until I unboxed it and noticed that it was considerably smaller.

It's LS50 Meta's I have I upgraded from the LS50s and TBH they are not hugely better vocals are slightly clearer may be down to my old original Audiolab 8000s amp I've re-capped it but should really look at demoing another amp. When the Meta's came out you could get the LS50s for under £500 who ever picked these up got a great set of speakers for the money. If I wasn't using the LS50 for another room I would have just kept using them.

A sub will sort those issues you are hearing compared to your Q300 best of both worlds keeps the mid/treble very clean and offers deeper bass. I don't normally watch movies on this setup but I just played the bank scene in the Dark Knight and it sounded great.

Too late for all that, I'm back on the Q300 and will remove any speaker ideas from my mind for a few more years at the least :p

Time to go back to buying biscuits and stuff!

One of those that are low profile so can stay plugged in all the time? I have a wired one and have been considering a Carly one to leave plugged in so the stereo can pull up real-time metrics and I can connect my phone to code/diagnose when needed without faffing with a cable but the Carly ones are not cheap and I'm not prepared to pay a premium to alleviate my laziness :p

Love that, it's going to be my next buy when the time comes.
May I ask where from?

Purchased from Jura / CW Sellors. Managed to get a 15% discount, I just caught the Jan sales.

The watch thread was already giving me issues but the more these show up I'm having a very difficult time not picking one up! Never been a watch guy but these are beautiful.

Cheers dude! It is definitely an understated one!

I mean a really boring one but a new consumer unit to bring me in-line with the latest wiring regs and allow for the rewire to commence, the cables entering throught the left and being stripped out over the next few weeks and all the cables will be top entry. It's a start!
