A typical spec me...£4k budget

I'd go something like below for build....

The tuf gaming is solid mid price board that stays cool, can take 4 pcie4m.2 nvme, and can be had in a bundle with the 12700k for £599.99, so in effect getting it for £225(for gaming 12900 not worth the premium over 12700 imo, as dfour says also..the msi z690 tomahawk he put in is a nice board too, though 4th nvme slot is gen3 only, you'd need to go to the msi edge for 4 gen4, which is same price as the tuf below, but no bundle that I could see anywhere.
The RM1000X is a v good psu , and seen it for £130 to £140
The Corsair will work as advertised speed and seen the new design variety for £125. The crucial would be better but they still want £160 for the non rgb variety, and from review, 10 game av fps diff was 1fps diff gaming at 1440p so wouldn't get hung up on C18 or C16 unless price the same or close

OCuk have just dropped price from £350 for the 2tb SN850, so £239.99 is as cheap as I've ever seen it and at £120 per 1tb, I think it's worth it, and if interested in that, wouldn't hang around..it sold out quick last time they had an offer like that

As previous, Arctic best price/performance..you could go for the rgb at £109 as EsaT put in above, and just turn it to white light..that way at least your mobo would be lit up a bit so you could see it, if that is of any interest
Case is subjective, I'd just get one that can take a 360mm in the roof as would rather have fans pulling in cool air and aio expelling (even though air will be slightly warmer from pc componenets), rather than aio having air drawing through it into case
So below can be had for £1,200, leaving plenty for case and any extra fans, gpu such as the 3090Fe for £1399 which was around for an hour yesterday before being sold out so not impossible, and monitor, which I wouldn't have a clue about. Hardware unboxed says there meant to be some new ones coming out in march that may be worth waiting for so could use current monitors and wait for reviews on those

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,330.97 (includes shipping: £11.10)

Interestingly, another forum member was speaking to ocuk, and they advised him to buy either crucial or corsair ram rather than patriot viper, as said it wasn't as reliable . Reviews for it are positive though...know anyone using it? Would like to know their thoughts
No but seems popular? Good point by @H2S04 if OP wants the best, but maybe this build should be DDR5 then? I think a lot of us are 'brand' creatures of habit if it has served us well, i know i am.

Agreed about brand habit....'if it aint broke etc'.
DDR5 still not worth it at the mo imo for gaming... take the corsair ram below you can get for £125

rec55L8.jpg

only thing I can think of is Asus are doing a conversion kit to allow ddr4 to go into a ddr5 board but that's extra cost, and by the time ddr5 comes down in price with faster ram, you'll prob want a more up to date mobo(ie prob a Z790 or Z890 if going intel or a AM5 board if going AMD)
https://www.anandtech.com/show/17136/asus-demonstrates-ddr5-to-ddr4-converter-card

then DDR5 seen Corsair 4800C40 non rgb for £265 or 212%...so more than double the price , and for 1440p gaming with 6000C36 ram used the gain was 3fps or 1.8%(ddr4 159, ddr5 162), and who knows how much that costs...5600C36 costs £400, so we talking over 3 times the price(or 320% price)...that was with 3600C14, but then counter that with the faster ddr5

Thanks for all the advice. Much appreciated. Just out of curiosity....am thinking Mini ITX as I will prob just replace everything in 4+ years so a smaller footprint might be nice and not planning on overclocking but also don't want things throttling due to the smaller form factor. Suggestions?

Seen a few posts on the memory area from people that just couldn't get it to run at rated speed. I have that RAM as well (assuming it's still the same - code is the same, but bought about a year ago) and couldn't get it to work at xmp speeds, had to run it at 3200mhz. Should have returned it but couldn't be bothered at the time, just wanted to get my pc running.

So yeah, I'd steer clear of it too.
That was me and it was odd to hear it after all the builds here being promoted to use this memory - and interesting to read the other comments after this post referring to not getting to 3600. Maybe not a lot in it but it does make me think about maybe Corsair Vengeance. I think you mentioned it previously - but I do not need to focus on the fact that a lot of memory is not listed as compatible with Intel 600 chips ? As it is my first build (history of buying pre built) I just want to avoid any potential issues. (Pairing it to i5-12600k and Asus Prime Z690).

Yeah technically compatibility of motherboards and RAM at a certain frequency hasn't been verified if it's not on the motherboard QVL list. However in practice, I believe most RAM should work at its rated speed on basically any motherboard. I've heard there's also a very low chance that a cpu memory controller might not work with memory at a high frequency, but for recent generations of CPUs it should be extremely rare that that's an issue at 3600mhz.

If you want 32gb of 3600mhz RAM I'd heard good things about the crucial ballistix C16 kit (https://www.overclockers.co.uk/cruc...00c16-3600mhz-dual-channel-kit-my-20r-cr.html) , but like a lot of RAM kits right now it's out of stock. A fair bit more pricy too. I'd probably give the corsair vengeance lpx kit a go, unless you want to pay a lot more for higher end stuff, which will gain some performance, but probably not worth it on a pure price to performance measure.

Arctic Freezer has 50% thicker radiator for more surface area than overpriced fashion brands!
Also advertised fan specs are mostly useless for real world:
https://martinsliquidlab.wordpress....w-specs-are-poor-measures-of-fan-performance/

plenty space for h150i elite capellix on the top in 5000x rgb case, also if he wants on the top push-pull. my only mistake is that mb which i sugessted asus rog z690 a gaming, does not have front usb c. so asus tuf z690 plus wifi is another option.

also, the cheapest h150i elite is 145.99.

Price will escalate, as you'll be looking at small form factor psu, so if you can get a case to fit a 3090, youllstill want plenty of grunt , only psu I've seen is the riverstone 1000w platinum at £199.99.
I like the lian li q58 but again £149.99, but comes with a riser gen4 cable.wont fit a 390fe though, as that's 335mmlong and longest card it can fit is 320mm, so you'll be looking at 3080ti, rather than 3090...

Forgot to add the 2tb sn850 for £239. And can get the ram for £125...

Thread on the case with reviews..think normal size case would be better, esp if you want a 3090 in it...

I take it you have a 5000x case?

Edit...I remember now...you have a 3070 aorus master...tempted by the 5000x:)

With that kind of budget you should upgrade every year or two, whatever you buy now, next year drop a grand on am5, mobo and ram, year after look at gfx say, etc

no front fans, only side-up-bottom. i like case with the front fans. and 011d xl is a little bit more money around 205, i can get 51 snow around £190. 5000x around £129. 51 snow is heavy, and for that reason i will probably buy 5000x.

Yeah, got it for £120....had been waiting of the 011d XL to drop, but couldn't ignore the price diff. Do like it though, only wish window tint wasn't quite so dark so could see more of the motherboard, but only a small grumble...upside, turn rgb off and it's a glass box, no distractions

Well all ordered, hopefully the build goes ok as I haven't built one for 5 years but am sure I will get it!

Really looking forward to some pics.. You should start a thread in the build section... Good luck with the build and enjoy. Haven't got a decent monitor for mibe yet, or keyboard for that matter... Will be interested in your thoughts on those once you use:)

Build will take slightly longer as managed to just grab a 3090 in the latest drop, luckily hadnt opened the 3080Ti yet!
