Horizon: Forbidden West

I gave up on Valhalla. I'd sunk 50 hours in, done all of the main quests but the last one and tons of side missions and I was still well below the level required to do the last mission. That's bad game design. I personally think doing all the main missions should put you at a high enough level to complete the game.

They already pushed Odyssey to the limit, but was somewhat offset by nice location, funny characters. Origins was a great length, a sweet spot. I actually have the Gold edition of Valhalla but can't for the life of me finish it off, let alone the dlc..

Interesting that Digital Foundry recommend playing at 30fps on PS5 as there are more “next-gen” graphical features than in the 60fps mode.

While 60fps may seem like the obvious choice bearing in mind the 2160p vs 1800p checkerboard difference, it's actually the case that the graphical quality is far richer in the 30fps mode. Both myself and Rich Leadbetter (who also played the game) opted to play at 30fps. Double the frame-rate is nice, but you're missing out on a decently-sized chunk of the next-gen (current-gen?) experience.

Yes - quite a large one.
I've not read through all the reviews - fear the game being spoilt.
However one reviewer said they played and reviewed the game as it was and then found the Day 1 patch cleared up the vast majority of the issues/bugs he'd seen.
Damn. Cheers for that. I’m on 75mb downstream so it does take a while for downloads.

Backing up my PS4 Pro tonight and slapping a 2TB ssd in there so I can get snappier load times. Can’t wait for Friday!

Currently replaying the game on the PC and had forgotten how good the lore was about The Old Ones.

Don't forget the soundtrack. That was one of the things I had done after completing it. Was purchasing the OST on iTunes back in 2018.

A SSD will literally half the load times if it's anything like the first game.

Yeah I’m expecting a massive increase in speed. I know an SSD in the Pro can’t run anywhere near max speeds but it’s still a big change.

That 5400rpm HD imo when the Pro was released should have been an SSD though I can’t recall how much a 512GB one would have been back then let alone a 1TB.

It is. I felt a big difference and smoother gameplay on the regular PS4 with a 1GB EVO. I had put one into the normal PS4 back in mid 2019 as the load times on Anthem were so atrocious on a mechanical.

Compared that with Valhalla...100 hours in and you want to slit your wrists knowing you've got another 50 more to go. I totally agreed with Skill Up's review of it, great open world game but needed to be 30 to 50 hours tops, not the 150 plus it became. Why can't Ubisoft figure this out?

It was a real grind to finish it, that’s for sure. I only finished it because I had already committed so much - worse, the final hours just offered more of the same generic quests/cutscenes etc. At least Sony game studios aim for some variety with some truly epic set pieces.

That looks great!

I might do it on dead easy mode for first playthrough at 30fps but then go to 60fps for ultra hard new game+ (if it’s the same trophies as the first game).
