For those in Birmingham - what's this waste ground?

I don't miss Birmingham one little bit - I was born in Ladywood but I think that has now changed colour. :)

Basically everyone I've come across that used to live in Birmingham says the same as you.

I seen enough when I was there to know what it's like.

When I was a youngish trucker in the late sixties early seventies, aside from maybe Erdington, Harborne and Edgbaston, most of Birmingham was like waste ground to me coming from hip Bermondsey.
In all honesty though, I was in and out in the same day most trips, but the one night that I did stay in a small hotel in the centre I went into some blinding pubs, and enjoyed the night.

My best guess, given the likelihood of the contents of the last census, would have been a clearing for another Mega Mosque. But apparently you mustn't say things like that ;) I certainly wouldn't have put hard earned on a site for a new Colossal Cathedral ;)

I recognise the cathedral in the OP's photo as it connects the Bullring/station area to Digbeth.

I just hope they don't bulldoze Digbeth as that's the dance capital of Birmingham. Been to many good nights there such as Godskitchen @ Sanctuary (now the Institute), Code/Air, Custard Factory, Rainbow Warehouse and Boxxed. Also Sundissential @ Sanctuary but other places as well such as DNA near New Street Station and Polysexual at the Dome II on Bristol Street. Nearly all of these places gone now but it's a sign of the times. If you went back 20 years though, then Birmingham was the best place for clubbing. The clubbing/dance scene is in desperate need of a bounce-back from the 2020-2021 disaster that was called covid-19. Trancecoda was the last decent event I went to, but I think they're now London-based.

Think I went to Code/Air to see Paul Van Dyke when I was 17.

I'm not pro-religion either, so I agree with you in that respect, but my issue is the general erosion of nightlife. A lot of the clubs that I went to 20 years ago have been converted into offices or flats. Pretty boring stuff. Then any other venues that didn't get demolished became restaurants, bingo halls and god forbid - "gentlemen's clubs", like there isn't enough of those already.

There appears to still be an abundance of "nightlife" in Birmingham, you just need to cast aside your dancing shoes, take up a firearm and a none culinary knife, and get your kicks pimping and selling drugs. You gotta move with the times brother.... ;}

Nah not at all, nightlife in Brum is a lot safer than it was 10-20 years back. Times are changing for the better. Bars are getting classier and/or more bohemian, super clubs are less appealing and entry systems much tighter. The after hours issues still exist though, where drunk footballers still get robbed for their jewellery etc.
