The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

Well, my girlfriend has just bought me the new 2021 cask strength 12yo release for my birthday. Will report back

Great! Not tried it myself but always good to build a rapport and chat to someone in a shop. Reading online tasting notes turns into a bit of a nonsense after a while, turns into a blur lol..
I've created a Bunna monster! I hope it is good, and happy birthday!

The Tin Cup is lovely. Got all those Bourbon flavours I really like but with something a little different, defo going on the buy again list even if it where at full price. Would make a cracking Old Fashioned.

The Sexton I'm not so keen on. Don't know how to describe it, tastes a little flat and characterless.

A word of warning, don't always expect adding water to peated whiskies will take the edge off how peaty they smell and taste, it can actually have the opposite effect. It's more likely to happen with higher abv whiskies 46%+, but again that also isn't always the case. I won't bore you with the details of why it happens, but just give you a heads up in case you come across it as I've seen people drown their whisky thinking they just haven't added enough water when it occurs.

We recently visited 4 distilleries while on holiday in Scotland and the tour guides often said something along the lines of "add a little water to release the peat".
It made me chuckle thinking of someone who doesn't like peat adding water to soften it, only to discover the result was quite the opposite :p

Just bought a bottle of Tobermory 12 to try, someone appears to have drank all of my Caol Ila, should be a little different!

The Caol Ila really grew on me, the more I tried it, the more I liked it, but I think the next bottle will be an Ardbeg Wee Beastie.

This has been on my list for a while, let me know what it's like? Ledaig is excellent but I wonder if Tobermory might be a little 'plain' in comparison.

Will do, it just popped up on offer last week, 30 quid on S&S, seemed rude to turn it down

Just having my first wee glass, 12hr shift tomorrow, so it's just a sip.

First impressions are that it tastes similar to my favourite Bunnahabhain 12 initially, but then becomes far more peppery, very nice so far.

Isolating in the bedroom with Covid atm. Day 4 with no real symptoms so might have to get the GF to drop a bottle off outside the door later as I'm bored out my skull.

Got a tasting at Grain and Glass in Birmingham Friday. Went for the 'Tour of Scotland' option, though now I wish I'd gone for the 'World of Whiskey' instead.

Regardless, gives me a chance to refine my palate a bit. Only whiskeys I've tried so far are the bottles I've been able to buy or small glasses I've had forced on me by my dad. Booked a table there afterwards and they seem to have a really big range of stuff to try.

Anyone spot anything there that I should prioritize?

The 6 choices in the tour of scotland look good! The Springbank, Glendronach and Port Charlotte should all be very good indeed.

Did you want any other recommendations from the menu you listed? If so how many :D and what is your general taste?

Yes please!

To be honest there's not much I've tried that I haven't enjoyed. I suppose I lean more towards the sweeter, fruitier types but then again I've not really tried the smokier, peatier variants enough to say I dislike them.

The Kilkerran 8 CS is bargain at that price, if they have any left as I'm sure it'll be extremely popular. Also Campbeltown, Glen Scotia 18 is worth a go I think.

Highland Park Cask Strength is apparently a bit polarising but good value there.

Caol Ila 18 and Laphroaig 10 CS are the standout value from Islay I think.
