NBC news report saying some Russian forces had surrendered due to not wanting to fight Ukrainians. They had not known they were going to fight Ukraine. Also reports 30-60k Russian troops currently deployed and moral is low. Sounds like they are being forced to do something they don’t want to.

Let's hope these reports are true, this looks like there is hope for the human race.

Another factor I suspect is that Ukraine is still getting high level intel - allowing them to blunt Russia's advance somewhat and/or avoid battles which would exhaust their manpower and resources for limited effect - or at least I hope so. It will make a huge difference in managing Russia's push into the country if utilised properly.

I should think that they also got help with defence planning from the Pentagon et al as well.

How will they get it into Ukraines hands I wonder? This goes Pete Tong for Russia I can see them sponsoring terror attacks in European cities as revenge.
I’m sure there are still strong supply lines. Ukraine likely has a strong force focused on maintaining supply from the Western border. The Russians won’t dare go near that border the chance of getting attacked would be high (a US official pointed out this risk earlier saying they couldn’t be blamed if they fire at Russians near the border).

So you support the return of national service, it would be a great way to deal with the knife crime in this country give those kids a purpose and some discipline.

Exactly it would.

But i would expand it from the old national service.

Everyone from 18 to 30 and for five years of service.

Eighteen months would not be long enough to get real sense of purpose and discipline into modern 20yr olds.

Burdening the youth while the profligate elite in this country get away with defrauding the public on a daily basis?

The optics of this are hard to dispel. However... we may need to upgrade our standing forces on NATO's eastern flank so perhaps some amount of service will be necessary.

I think these reports about Ukraine doing well are premature. Given the power of the Russian military, surely it's just a matter of time before Ukraine are seriously overwhelmed.

Depends what the goal was - but in terms of being useful for defending the country you don't need full on national service - part time training works fine to instil weapons training and basic combat drill i.e. how to respond when things start flying rather than just panic/go blank.

I hope that the Ukrainians got a load of ground to air shoulder launched missiles in the arms drops. It's very hard for helis to survive with gorilla style urban warfare.

Would you mind expanding on this? Genuinely interested.

If Russia stays with in Ukraine what cause would the US have to fire on them? Don't misconstrue this, I'm not pro-Russia at all! Just curious to understand why this wouldn't just antagonise Russia and on what grounds the US would legitimise it?

Countering a potential Russian advance further in to the West? Despite not quite yet having a proper footing in Ukraine.
