Putin together with his political and security thugs are simply the modern iteration of their forebears. I hope that the progressive youth of Russia can eventually break free from their past.

Frustrating thing is the tyranny on show here only understands strength, the longer we, France and Germany, etc. delay with half-measures for our own convenience the more that is seen as weakness and emboldens Putin. We are well past the point where it is possible to negotiate by holding back on taking measures like SWIFT, etc.

Would you mind expanding on this? Genuinely interested.

If Russia stays with in Ukraine what cause would the US have to fire on them? Don't misconstrue this, I'm not pro-Russia at all! Just curious to understand why this wouldn't just antagonise Russia and on what grounds the US would legitimise it?

Countering a potential Russian advance further in to the West? Despite not quite yet having a proper footing in Ukraine.
It was on the news earlier. Can’t remember the officials name. They said US will not fight in Ukraine however there was a risk of Russian forces being attacked if they were near the border with NATO countries. I expect if forces approached the border or jets started flying around close to the border they aren’t likely to be around long.

Yeah but the agreement against nuclear aggression was in the same paragraph as the agreement against invading Ukraine, so pretty sure Putin's flushed Russia's copy by now.

  1. Respect Belarusian, Kazakh and Ukrainian independence and sovereignty in the existing borders.
  2. Refrain from the threat or the use of force against Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
  3. Refrain from using economic pressure on Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine to influence their politics.
  4. Seek immediate Security Council action to provide assistance to Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine if they "should become a victim of an act of aggression or an object of a threat of aggression in which nuclear weapons are used".
  5. Refrain from the use of nuclear arms against Belarus, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.
  6. Consult with one another if questions arise regarding those commitments.

Looks a bit ambiguous to me.

4 KC135 American tankers flying around West coast of Ukraine, I wonder what they are refueling. A British tanker from Brize also and a Eurofighter returning from Poland.

So when these sanctions kick in are the expecting Russia to give back what it taken?

I highly doubt that in private the western governments have any illusions about what Russia is doing or going to do, but they have to put on a show to their domestics and is especially true for those with upcoming elections.

It is quite a possibility albeit not all forces involved are as expendable. Still videos from Belarus, etc. of larger concentrations of forces moving to the border region which aren't part of current action.
Maybe my western lens is obscuring my thoughts but sending in young conscripts to 'test out defenses' will only result in high numbers of casualties and body bags being sent back to Russia which surely can't be good? Better send you best forces in first and secure the strong points/bridge heads and let the rest of army storm through? Anyone those paratroopers at the airport near Kviv certainly won't be conscripts.

Supposedly round the clock combat patrols over Poland and probably Romania, etc.

Ukraine ranks:
1st in Europe in proven recoverable reserves of uranium ores;
2nd place in Europe and 10th place in the world in terms of titanium ore reserves;
2nd place in the world in terms of explored reserves of manganese ores (2.3 billion tons, or 12% of the world's reserves);
2nd largest iron ore reserves in the world (30 billion tons);
2nd place in Europe in terms of mercury ore reserves;
3rd place in Europe (13th place in the world) in shale gas reserves (22 trillion cubic meters)
4th in the world by the total value of natural resources;
7th place in the world in coal reserves (33.9 billion tons)

The real reason right?
