Maybe my western lens is obscuring my thoughts but sending in young conscripts to 'test out defenses' will only result in high numbers of casualties and body bags being sent back to Russia which surely can't be good? Better send you best forces in first and secure the strong points/bridge heads and let the rest of army storm through? Anyone those paratroopers at the airport near Kviv certainly won't be conscripts.

Well if it is accurate then maybe Putin felt the risk of Ukraine's far more battle-ready position and armaments made him reluctant to send in his carefully crafted elites after expending the effort in South Ossetia/Donbas/Syria/other areas to gain experience

Testing defences is a fairly routine way to go about it albeit the pace and composition is usually different. But maybe Russia is overly leery of what intel Ukraine is getting with US support. They don't care about loss of life in quite the same way we do - as commentators have been saying tonight if Russia unleash a full bombardment and assault tonight don't expect consideration for human life to be put ahead of "tactical expediency".

They didn't receive 12 million firearms.
You don’t know what they have. Plus as I said Ukrainians can already carry weapons. They interviewed Ukrainians on the news earlier and they were talking about having guns and explaining their sons and daughters were also armed.

Was talk of 10K automatic weapons handed out in Kyiv - that needs to be more like 50K (on top of existing numbers) with plenty of ammo and heavier weapons able to deal with tanks to really mean much other than a few days of sporadic engagements :s Kyiv is quite a defendable city, even against modern air power if you can bog down armour in the streets.

Sadly I'd be getting a bit itchy if I was one of the Baltic states, the weakness the West has shown so far will only encourage Putin to test the limits of it...

The legal ability to carry a weapon, and having one is completely different.

They recently announced 10,000 weapons would be handed out, that's slightly short of 12 million.

Still just speculation unfortunately, though I'd think a lot of people wouldn't have bothered arming themselves thinking it was never going to happen, but plenty of others will have done so.

Who knows what the numbers are.

I saw that earlier as well. To be fair a paving slab off a building can do a lot of damage to these vehicles. They are very vulnerable once in the cities.

The protests are growing...

If he does this all wrong it could be end of the beginning...

I really hope so, but how far would he go to crush his own people who want him gone.

If the people can reach critical mass then he is ******. He would have to deploy very large numbers of military personnel to keep the locals in check and then he is effectively fighting on 2 fronts. It needs for enough of the people to decide this is a madness and for enough of them to not be scared to work. Would be about the right time for some outside foreign actors to get the people agitated and angry enough to start going into full riot and remove Putin mode. I guess its easy for us to say the Russian people should just revolt against their tyranical leader, but would we do the same thing in their position, knowing that the net result if we fail would either be a gulag in siberia for life or death ?

Well they aren’t about to send them in windmilling are they! We don’t know what they have. It’s 18-60 males and that’s 12m people in Ukraine.

That lays firmly at Bildens feet, the debacle of the Afghanistan withdrawal gave Putin the balls to do this

I half suspect that the average western 18 year old would stand there arms outstretched saying come at me bro, thinking they are so good at Fortnite and Call of Duty that they will surely win a gunfight. Lets hope Ukrainian 18 year olds are made of sterner stuff :D
