The completely over the top covid-19 response in the west certainly gave a signal to Putin - he knew our risk-o-meter was completely broken and there would be no appetite to actually do anything other than slap on more sanctions, which ultimately just embolden and entrench his position further. Have to say Russia and China are miles ahead in strategy and playing the long game, pretty much pushing the west down paths that our politicians simply have no idea they are going down.

'Completely over the top' - whereas welding people shut in their homes is completely rational? Stop feeding into the propaganda machine mate.

Over the top ? I don't recall the UK welding doors shut in blocks of flats and throwing in bags of rice as food aka Chinese style....

The west has seen nothing but prosperity for the past 50years, yes it has its issues but it's a damm site better than Soviet/Chinese style corruption. In fact another one ignored.

No the actual difference is that this in Europe right next door to us which is why people are "outraged" and they "care". Out of sight out of mind right. The hypocrisy is pathetic. Wake me up when we start caring about people outside of Europe and North America. Oh wait that will never happen.

Coincidentally not all of my family are as safe as you assume but that is irrelevant.

Indeed. They have departments devoted to this - including academic analysis.

There is a whole raft of things which would be far ahead on the list than our COVID response. I don't think the meetings/calls between Biden and Putin helped as Biden generally ended up looking out of touch and humiliated to the point of lashing out angrily.

I use to hear people mention western hypocrisy in the past in relation to the war on terror and I would casually dismiss it and I never truly understood what they meant till I saw some of the posts in this thread. We love to talk about russian propaganda but the west are also really good at it as well.

Its really easy to say that as a Brit when we're in no way as entwined with Russia economically and from an energy point of view; what are Germany expected to do shut down their economy when they stop sending gas?

SWIFT isn't as big a deal as it was before anyway; there's plenty other ways for the Russians to move money around
