What do you expect them to do?

Missile blast everything to dust?

Send in hundreds of thousands of ground troops and shoot everyone?

The Russians want to keep Ukraine intact, they want to overthrow and change the government with absolute mimimum collateral damage.

Oh I don't know, maybe stop getting all of their hardware blown up. Do you think Russia have done well so far?

At least the slow advance is giving people who want to become refugees a chance to escape. The Ukrainians are putting up a valiant effort but stand no chance against the might of Russia. Putin doesn't care about how many lives (Ukrainian or russian) this costs. He's getting old, he's drunk with power, full of resentment over a former part of the USSR becoming democratic and has a huge army at his disposal.

The Ukrainians should surrender to minimise loss of life.

Fog of war and one sided reporting (at least from that reddit link that was posted here before). It is difficult to get a real picture of how well it is going, what objectives have been met and what is going to happen. MoD thinks that Russia is facing more resistance than expected...that's all we have officially from our MoD.

Reports were close to the US Iraq war numbers this morning. Today has been a big loss for Russia again according to reports so could be towards 10k. I’ll wait to see what better estimates come out.
Wow that’s a lot. I thought they were steaming through the country but now it’s the other way around. Someone is getting their information wrong it seems.

That's the spirit are you French?

Apparently reports coming out of Severnaya Satellite Control Centre that a Russian general has been seen leaving with the access keys for an advanced orbital EMP weapon system.

This would be a real escalation if true...
GDI is that you?

You cannot be serious...

Admittedly I did think it was a Red Alert reference at first until I read the station name again.

You have seen the comments the head of the Russian space agency RosCosmos said regarding the ISS and it being forcefully deorbited ? And Putin saying that Ukrainian leadership are drug addicts to justify his war ? It wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility at this point

Anyone else get the impression that Russia's invasion has been pretty damn pathetic so far? For all their posturing as a country to be 'feared' they seem rather underwhelming in their ability.

Yup, they've been rather second rate so far... they've got the numbers/equipment though (well at least to do a Georgia, not to occupy for any lengthy period).

Russian armour inside a major city will be interesting if the population does go along with the requests to make Molotov cocktails.

This is cope tbh.. they've been pretty bad *in spite* of that!

Yes and I'm wondering how long it is before Russia start using their standard doctrines of indiscriminate bombardment for days to soften up targets, if Putin doesn't win this he is finished and I'm sure he would have no concern going out with a bang given how unhinged he has apparently become. I'm honestly surprised he's still been restrained in this war on Ukraine basically crippling the Russian military ability to do their job the way they are used to, even the West use bombardment for days to soften up targets in wars they start, it's not really surprising Russia hasn't done this and have instead gone for a lightning fast assault that has definitely stalled but it's worrying what will be done now given Putin will not accept a loss and humiliation
Hasn't he gone in with the 'liberator' spiel, saving them from the horrible nazi's in their government? You are right though, if he loses he's finished, so he can't afford to lose. The longer they hold out, the rougher it's going to get.

Well it's not difficult to take empty countryside. Easy to get encircled though, it could end up a real mess for Russia.

I wonder if Putin has started to come under real threat and this is an attempt at distraction, its hard to see what he will gain if he doesn't win extremely quickly.

Initially yes but recent comments from him have him calling the Ukrainians who are taking up arms as terrorists so at this point I'm starting to believe that nothing will be off the table for him to win this war

They have not done badly.
Got right through to the main city in less than two days, with, in the grand scheme (of troop numbers and equipment numbers they could use) , minute amount of damage to numbers of troops and equipment.

They go in with minimal troops and equipment, if they find a tough area (the airport yesterday) they go in properly with larger numbers and gain the area sucessfully.

They do not want to flatten everything, and kill everyone, that is not the aim here, if they did want to do that, they could easily have, without putting any troops into ukraine at all.

Hang on, that sounds very high - what is that based on?
