A Scot and an Englishman can both be called British because they come from an Island called Great Britain, it has nothing to do with ethnicity. By contrast Ukranians and western Russians can both be called European.

The point is, the main ethnic group of Russia is ethnic Slavs, the main ethnic group of Ukraine is ethnic Slavs. "Ethnic Russians" are not a thing, it's just a propaganda phrase Putin is using to try and make his **** stick because he knows it applies to damn near 100% of people in Ukraine as the two nations share a core ethnic group.

Its not wildly different from the situation we are in to be fair. A lot of our armour is old 60's/70's/80's equipment modernised to some extent, the "teeth arms" side of our armour is more modern for the most part, however the majority of our other equipment, command/supporting elements are still rolling around in Bulldogs "modernised" FV432/6's. Thats why there is such a big push to bring in projects like AJAX, BOXER, CR3 and they are also looking at future replacement for supporting armour although thats quite someway off.

They need to just do it, don't give him time to react (hopefully they can be fast tracked given the aggression shown towards Ukraine).

If the book I linked is the blueprint for his plans then he definitely intends to go after Finland anyway and absorb it into Russia. If they are a NATO member then it will almost certainly deter him. However, merely threatening it as Ukraine did encourages him to accelerate his plans so that they are put into action before they can do it.

Mr. Hitler had that attitude and look what happened there. The Russians are used to hardship, accept orders and discipline, are as tough as old boots, and from the ones I know over here would be a first choice to have alongside me if there was any physical argy-bargy going on. Their national pride is exemplary and their willingness to fight for it evident from WW2 to today's Russian football hooligans ;) Underestimate them at your peril!
 
One of the key lessons here is "Don't give up your nukes"

If Russia didn't have nukes there would be a no-fly zone and all their armour would have been destroyed.

Interestingly theres 1 country in Europe that fully designed a nuclear weapon but chose not to build it - Sweden ! In the 1960s they chose to build a huge airforce instead.

It’s worth noting that Moscow held all the arming codes for every last nuke based in Ukraine.

We did as well, designed and created our own fission and Thermo nuclear varients. However, in late 50's decided to pool our resources with the Yanks, instead of following down what was proving to be a hugely costly route.

I've spent a lot of time lurking on this thread and can't shake the thought that all of this doesn't make sense. Putin is meant to be a calculated guy and therefore you'd think this invasion would be meticulously planned, could have worked on plans for years and years, covering so many possibilities and tactics.

I've always seen Putin as a rational, calculating sort who plays the long game. This seems so utterly out of character, I think he might be... ill? Either physically or mentally.

Just idle speculation, really.
 
I hope there are at least equal number of immigrants staying and fighting alongside the Ukranian nationals.

There's something that doesn't sit right with me, immigrants moving into a country when the times are good, and then fleeing at the first opportunity.
