Now I could very well be wrong here, but I know a bit about tanks, and I believe that is either a T-72B or the export T-72S variant, this is important for three reasons:

  1. Because this is a tank from the 1980s that does not look to have been retrofitted with any improvements (that 40 year old ERA design has no chance versus modern anti-tank weapons).
  2. Because this tank is inferior to every tank Ukraine has in service.
  3. Because Russia knew point 1 and 2 but sent it anyway.

I'm aghast at how badly Russia is conducting this invasion, don't get me wrong I'm not unhappy they're doing badly I'm just surprised by it. It's like they sent their junk so they didn't have to risk losing the good stuff and it turns out the junk isn't good enough.

I wonder how extensive the intelligence/SIGINT/imaging support the Ukranians are getting from the West. Would put them in a much stronger tactical position if they have multiple natio s intercepting communications and providing real-time satellite tracking off Russian forces.

I remember a few on here saying it be all over before Sunday when it first started

Are you guys still thinking this ?

I was one of those people who said that Ukraine would fall to Russia by Sunday.

I'm not thinking the same way now. It appears increasingly that Russia will lose this.

I don't know what will happen to the Ukraine now though. All those people who have fled, will they return? Would they want to? Some will and some won't, I suppose.

Yeah, I was thinking about, the US particularly will be feeding Ukraine details of locations of Russian units I suspect - sounds like the Ukranians are very efficient with targetting Russian armour.

I didn't expect the Russian military to be so inept. I thought they would quickly overpower and control everything very quickly.

Turkey blocking those ships is a big move. Russia is on its own now, pretty much.

If Russia decide that this is an act of war or that they are hindering their progress this could end up with whatever "block" they employ being destroyed and thus.... Well the fan goes brown at that point!

This could be the beginning of the end for putin
I was thinking the same. He simply can't withdraw at this point so has to become increasingly agressive. It's all or nothing because if he fails then his position at home will be at risk. That can't be a good thing for the Ukranian people who I suspect will come under increasing bombardment.

Every time I hear a small victory for the Ukranians I give a little cheer even though I know it's an impossible struggle. But then I'm quite conflicted because most of the Russian military probably don't want to be there either and they will be losing their lives alongside Ukranians. There are no winners here.

A lot depends on holding Kyiv I think and Zelensky staying at the helm, it's a shame the capital isn't more central because it's near the Northern border, they will struggle to hold it without committing a lot of their forces to the region.

No chance unless Russia significantly up the ante.

If the plan was to take Kyiv within a few days, I was expecting far more elite regiments and new equipment to have been used.

This I what I said earlier, I trained for 16 years thinking that Russia was a formidable foe, if this is all they have I’m actually quite disappointed and surprised

I wonder what happens to Russian soldiers who disobey? At least there's no death penalty (yet).

I heard being a conscript is pretty brutal.

Makes you wonder if some that don't have families to be punished back home, might think 'sod this' and defect to Poland or elsewhere if they end up somewhere near that border.

i dont know which war costs 20bln/day, certainly this one doesnt for the Russkies. By the looks of it, 20bln a day is exaggerating

It's possible he meant in rubles. 20bn would be just over $240m a day. Isn't a single S400 about about $300-400m Obviously s400 aren't just rolling around Ukraine, but possibly a lot of other similarly expensive equipment.

I remember several posters yesterday adamant that Ukraine should have surrendered already. Various others earlier in the thread repeating Russian talking points at face value re: being threatened by NATO expansion etc...

Sad thing is that if some NATO allies had actually better-funded their militaries then Putin perhaps wouldn't feel as confident at being able to move troops from the borders with NATO countries and redeploy them to Ukraine.

In reality, there are like 4 NATO battle groups sent to the Baltics, he's not threatened by NATO/worried about NATO invading... it's an excuse, this is more about restoring Russia's spheres of influence, it's straight-up imperialism... he doesn't like the notion of a free, democratic Ukraine aligned with the rest of the west.

There seems to be a lot if 'celebration' on the internet as to how bad the Russians have been / how good the Ukraine defence is so far, even talk of them potentially winning! but I'm really worried that Russia is just going to kick it up a notch.

Looks to me from all the video's seen so far that Russia really hasn't thrown everything behind this invasion, & is keeping all the best, most advanced equipment, IFVs, Artillery, & presumably the best soldiers & special forces well back.
