I must admit from what I've seen, unless Russia are intentionally sending their absolute "c team" reserves with their old tech, they are not quite the force I was expecting.

When America were using their "shock and awe" missiles flying by remote TV hitting the area the size of a square meter from god knows how far away.

And then that video of that Russian jet flying perilously low firing rockets seemingly not quite in the same direction....makes you wonder.....
It is bizarre that aside from the amount of troops and tanks committed, Russia has put noticeably less effort into this than they did against ISIS in Syria O.o

It certainly seems like Putin is getting fed up of this resistance now and is looking for an excuse to bring out the heavier weaponry.

We could end up with indiscriminate shelling of all parts of Kyiv soon, possibly including thermobaric weapons.

Is there a point at which the West has to step in? It could be a massacre if Putin loses his mind...

He'll be loosing support at home an abroad if he goes down that route though.

He told the Russian people and international community that they were going in to stop the genocide and denazify (lol) Ukraine.

Indiscriminate shelling and killing of the very civilians they supposedely went in to liberate won't go down well at all I'd assume.

Probably the biggest indication of what's really going on on the ground is the willingness of other nations to now give the Ukranians weaponary. With recent memories of western weaponary falling into the wrong hands when the Afghan army evaporated there was likely some reticence but that will now have been dispelled to a certain degree.

That's a fair point and unfortunately at some stage the Russians will probably get their hands on javelins, NLAWs etc.

They will be ripe to being reverse engineered if they haven't already been. Not that it matters in this conflict but having the edge on the weapons tech is a huge safety net.

Probably go to China.

Yeah I got it wrong quite obviously. I am as human as any other posting in this thread.
Although I’ve also been accused of being a Russian Bot, Russian, A traitor all sorts of funny things but I got over it pretty quickly ;).
Evidently not if you’re still whining about it. Where my violin?

It appears the soldiers being sent from what I've read and seen have mostly been conscripted soldiers. Remember that over there if you are of a certain age then you must serve military time for at least 1 year. If you do not then you face a 2 year prison term. Only certain criteria will let you off having to serve, like if you are the son of an Oligarch etc. These guys mostly don't want to fight in this way over in Ukraine hence why we have been seeing photos and videos of Russian soldiers surrendering, abandoning their vehicles, removing uniforms and fleeing once on Ukraine soil. Today there was a video of a Russian solder crying with palms in hand as Ukrainians tell him he is not welcome in their country.

It is as if putin has sent out the expendables first to wear the Ukraine forces down, but if that's not the case, then the Russian military doesn't really have the kind of number and skill that it portrayed itself to have in the past any more.

I don't think anything about those weapons is secret or that Russia and China don't already have that tech

You do realise this is a discussion forum right, the reason people have been discussing all the things you mentioned is because that's the point of the thread
Yeah but we also have people condemning the use of misinformation and rightly so, yet are quite happy to participate in it and applaud it, if it’s aimed in the direction of a common enemy.

Nothing like a common enemy to bring people together though right.

Maybe they just cared less about destroying infrastructure/killing civilians in Syria.

I suspect though that whilst Russia likes to portray that it has a modern military with high tech equipment, the reality is that their good stuff is in short supply and the vast majority of their forces are still using soviet era equipment.

Edit: So Ukraine are reporting that Russia's losses so far are:
  • 14 aircraft (13 attackers (SU-25 and other CAS) and 1 IL-76)
  • 8 helicopters
  • 102 tanks
  • 536 armored cars and APCs
  • 15 artillery pieces
  • 1 Buk air defense system
  • 3500 soldiers (dead, captured, wounded)
I expect Ukraine are inflating the numbers for morale but honestly even half or a third of that in 48 hours is surely a massive blow. I wonder what Ukraines real losses are thus far, I saw on BBC that a military hospital in the east has all 400 beds filled with wounded, grim.

I was thinking about this driving back home earlier. You only have to go back to the conflict in Kosovo to get precedent for NATO stepping in when civilians are being delibratly and systematically targeted in countries outside of the coalition.

Makes you wonder if the actual military actually want to commit
Yeah, it looks like they made a push for Kyiv yesterday, stalled and are now bogged down unwilling to engage Ukranian forces whilst they run out of ammo, fuel and food without any direction for what they should be doing. No plan B.

According to the website Cat posted. They already have an NLAW
