The unofficial US-RU military diplomatic comms must be rather hot and toasty at the moment.

I would also expect once Putin is dead, that there's a large roundup of war criminals..

However the fall out would render Chinese land, food and water radioactive. The planet is globally linked, so it would not just be a local problem.

The kinds of nuclear weapons currently in use wouldn't I believe lead to as much fallout that implies, but it wouldn't matter because China would be targeted pre-emptively.

Pretty much. They would be able to see the launches, but not ascertain the payload - the assumption would be nuclear and that is what the US-RU comms would be "If a launch occurs, it would be considered to carry a nuclear payload and the US would respond to the threat".

Its not automatic; there would be human intervention needed to launch any counter strike

Pretty much. They would be able to see the launches, but not ascertain the payload - the assumption would be nuclear and that is what the US-RU comms would be "If a launch occurs, it would be considered to carry a nuclear payload and the US would respond to the threat".

A human being still gets 5-10 mins to evaluate the threat depending on the type of launch detected and ETA to the hit. The systems that are automated are only in the event that there's an actual hit and the chain of command is hit. This is to assure a response in kind even if all people who can make a decision to strike are killed in the first wave.

i know, but a response is measured in minutes, it must be quick. I guess it takes a few minutes to confirm the trajectory of the ICBM? what would you do till you have a confirmation, eat your nails while hoping it is not directed to you?

They'd be on alert so it's just a case of call the bloke with the nuclear launch code brief case handcuffed to their wrist that follows the president around.

The west doesn't allow sub or base commanders to initiate a launch. That prevents rogue commanders launching independently.
