Putin needs this over quickly, they will have a timeline for it and how long they can hold out for sanctions.

Sanctions have not even bit yet, For Ukraine to survive they need to hang on as much as possible which is just **** but it's better than bringing Europe into a full blown war.

What you describe is the situation Russia has been in for decades. It's part of what lead to the armed conflict this thread is about.

Putin thought he could roll over Ukraine without any meaningful consequences.

He was decidedly NOT concerned with how we would respond to his invasion..

Talking about it does not mean worry. You can't worry about that. As individuals most of us have absolutely no control over any of it. It's very different to covid for example.

It's talked about seriously by respected news outlets. It's not the dark corners of the Web it's being trawled up from.

It is absolutely a possibility. Only need a series of small errors or bad decisions for it to occur.

I don't think anyone is realistically running around like a loon, but simply discussing implications and what it means w.r.t. resolving the situation.

I personally don't think Putin will go down the nuclear route - todo so would trainwreck his plans and those of China etc.

Oddly there's no peep from the Russian Orthodox Church on the morality of this..

Two russian helis downed

First day of the war. Ukrainian soldiers are firing from Igla MANPADS at Russian helicopters with landing troops flying up to Gostomel

Russian Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters, which were heading with troops to the Gostomel airfield, during their flight over the Kiev reservoir. On the footage you can see that one Mi-24 helicopter was shot down.

It has all been about compellence with Putin, we are quite a few iterations of that from where direct use of nuclear weapons might enter the equation - but I wouldn't hold on to the old rationale for them not being used especially if Putin's back is to the wall.
