Too many.
It's really simple from the side who want to carry on as we currently are.

We supply anti aggression weapons
Our red line is nato countries being attacked
We bring economic sanctions

As sad as it is Ukraine is sacrificial to all out nuclear war

Nobody knows that though it all a guessing game calling Putin bluff could stop it risky I understand but it could, I wont change from my view but I understand people want to play the safe card.

thats what makes it so sad. Ukraine is a great place and not insignificant. But unfortunately not being a NATO member and coming under attack from an ex KGB nutter who is in command of one of the largest nuclear arsenals in the world makes them sacrificial at the altar of world peace. I don't know why people are that surpised, we were quite comfortable sacrificing places like Iraq at that very same altar, and they were not exactly an insignificant country either. They gave us Algebra, Robots (yes check your history), Paediatrics, Writing amongst other great things, but none of that mattered when it came to laying the smackdown. Which of course was only possible because they was no chance they could ever "win".

The level of risk is too high for anyone. Do you gamble? Because this is the ultimate gamble.

It's like betting your entire wealth on black at roulette.
Well it's a lot more than that. It's your life, your family's lives. Everyone's life.

I'm not sure for those who are saying it would actually do it if they genuinely had that power?

I like both of those - agreed on both from the observations.

I would ask one question - both had indicated on what does the west or russia want.. then giving the Ukrainians a mutually exclusive outcome.

If the Ukraine have had elections but then putin don't respect the outcome based on their decision - you're back to Putin taking it by force. This is where we are now.

Looking at the electoral maps they simply indicate you'll never have a singular vision for the country because it is split - this probably explains why the Ukrainians and Russians have had such as turbulent history of war.
 
Does anyone on here remember back to the 80's when the Cold War was still going strong? Were Russia as confrontational, bullish and just plain deluded back then? I'm guessing reporting would be a lot different and much much less access to information.
I was too young to have taken much notice back then. I do remember being aware of Russia's nuclear weapons back then, and that they were very very bad. Being so young when I learned about them, it meant little to me though.

True. But this has bee happening during the same timescale as Russia annexing Chrimea.
Russia sure is guilty of much here but we as in the west are guilty of a whole more. Easier to turn a blind eye though just makes a mockery of what is happening with Ukraine.

Yes I don't doubt it
From what limited stuff I would trust I have seen the Russian navy has been lavished compared to the other forces.

I mean they simply don't spend enough to have a 10,000 strong modern main battle tank set, 6000 fully modern nukes, a large modern navy, 200,000 full time regular troops etc etc

They don't spend that much more than the UK (estimates vary) and look how low our numbers are
