Yup, I did wonder how that would come into play.. I mean they host Russian troops (mostly locally recruited these days since 2014) and share a border... wonder if Ukraine has had much fighting back and forth there yet? Haven't heard anything re: that area.

They need to get Odessa first. But they will surely press into Transnistria if they get Odessa. Russian speakers etc etc
 
One of the challenges of hitting an inbound ballistic missile is simple speed. Generally an inbound ICBM will be travelling at 7000m/s, so assuming you can hit it (which is no mean feat) you need to be using an explosive that has a speed higher than 7000m/s, otherwise the ICBM will outrun the explosion.

Rather than a proximity explosion I thought they physically intercepted it? Clearly flight phase dependent.

Tbh, the TSAR Nuke was a single use weapon used just to show the world what the USSR was actually capable of. They certainly don't have that kind of power nowadays.
