MAD.

There is a very real difference between the EU defending a non-EU country and the EU defending an EU state. If the EU doesn't defend its own territory then you may as well bend over now and hand Poo Tin the lube.

Well then surely Russia would invade Georgia before it could join the EU if it meant a similar NATO level threat?

We still need cooperation from Russia when all this over. The threat of Nuclear weapons from Any country that decides to go for a land grab is the end of the world at some point as some loon will use them. All countries need to be prevented from investing making them.

Russia has just shown the world why you need them, it will be incredibly hard to reduce their numbers now.

Not to worry though guys, Lavrov has said that Russia won't use nuclear weapons and that it is the west threatening to use them. We can trust him right.....

Many of our banks outsource a very significant amount of IT support to India. I don't just mean helpdesk for customers, but entire application support teams for banking systems. All of my teams are either Indian or work for Indian service companies in other countries.

I know - that is my reason for mentioning it. I used to work for a bank's digital transformation team with large development centres out there - my ITIL operations were run from there and the development centres were also there.

Long term sanctions just ruin life for the actual people of Russia and they don't deserve that at all, in the short term I guess the hope is Putin might come under pressure from his wealthy comrades and as such he may call a cease fire or even his own government or FSB will remove him.

Sadly it would probably take the latter, he's surrounded by yes men currently which is obviously very dangerous - even the head of his foreign intelligence service was visibly nervous when being berated by him in a recent video. It would probably take a few brave insiders to overthrow him and I guess we've just gotta hope that that happens as it isn't a certainty for sure.

Oh and if ww3 doesn't get us. Climate change will.
Things like this will likely push birth rate down even further.

I just think you have to not think on it too much, theres no line you can draw once you start that thought process, if WW3 doesnt get us, climate change will, if climate change doesnt get us, a supervolcano like Yellowstone erupting will, if a supervolcano doesnt get us a 9.9 Richter earthquake will, if a 9.9 earthquake doesnt get us, an asteroid impact will, if an asteroid impact doesnt get us, a deadly disease will, if a deadly disease doesnt get us an alien invasion will. The list just goes on, you could cripple any chance of advancement or enjoyment of your life if you take that thought line. You just have to accept that we, as individuals and as a species, are transient. We come, we exist, we die and the next one comes along to take our place. All you can do is live your life to the fullest.

I can't believe how old and tired the Russian millitary force is, it's as if it's never had an upgrade from the cold war.... No wonder America was able to completely pound Iraq

The head of the FSB is actually one of his innermost circle. He grew up with Putin. However Putin likes playing mind games with people. It shows the character you're dealing with. No friends, only people he can play with for fun.

Or the opposite!
Live a bit more for the moment.
Not worrying is important I agree. Being aware is no bad thing.

The climate seems to be the unavoidable one.
WW3 could basically be anytime. But we can't have much time left? 100 years tops?

I'm pretty sure for climate we are in the area of unrealised technology saving us as cutting emissions etc just isn't going to happen.

That's not to say it will switch off in 100 years. But the significant effects are starting to show.

That's the hope. The people don't deserve it but can also free themselves. If the Russian people could overthrow the regime, it'd be a different world for them after. Social mood, which was already low in Russia and possibly contributed to the war decision will be even worse in Russia with the war and sanctions which will reflect badly on the leadership. The regime is going to have to work hard to put the blame elsewhere I think. Blocking the internet etc must surely just raise suspicion over what is really going on.

Yes I expect we will. I hope we do. But that could draw us into a war between the EU and another state where we have had little influence on EU foreign policy. It's a risk we could control to a certain extent if we were still in the EU.

Similarly, would the EU really want to help Britain if we were attacked in isolation and the other party was a nuclear power?

There's a really simple answer to this ;)

And you’re still probably a 1000x more likely to die in a car crash than any of these, but you still happily get in your car every morning

The danger is that the US senate look at the Russian threat and say - they aren't even a threat to hand weapons and then wonder why all the money goes to the US forces for super high tech. China are a different kettle of fish, and the danger is the senate clipping budget and then being completely under prepared for an aggressive china.

Given Russian military exports power India's military, I suspect that China would look at India as being just as weak in a fight. Lots of people but the same scenario would occur as Russia. Only difference is motivation and training -- that is what would make the difference to India.

On the plus side - the US forces can say to the senate "look what the cost of technology allows vs a larger army", the right tech magnifying each soldier. However in reality it was the training and tactics that failed the Russian army - something I would expect Putin to address in the army structure.. but if the corruption is so prevalent in the system and the divide between conscript and officer remains.. he's not going to change that.

I struggle to believe these numbers

RT media scum at their best. ... and she smiles with her never ending lies and trys to talk over him to cover her ass for the next question she has to lie about... who pays you he asks, she can't even answer the question as the answer is the Russian government as it is a state run news channel..

Precisely, or to trip and fall down the stairs and die, its just not worth dwelling on because it will simply hamper your life. You'll end up fretting about so many what-if scenarios that you'll not enjoy life. I am here on this planet, in this body for one reason only, because two other humans banged and I came about, at some point, for some reason, I will eventually die, be shoved in the ground and rot into nothing and thats it. Nothing more to it, no elevation to a higher plane of existence, no reincarnation. Just was and then wasnt. So all I do with this time is enjoy myself to the fullest because the day will come eventually when the enjoyment ends

I struggle to believe these numbers

In the earlier days I could believe it to a point as they were fielding a lot of new recruits, often with their command structure/officers hanging back, driving straight into ambushes too inexperienced to dismount and use infantry to sweep so when a vehicle went up it was taking multiple soldiers with it. (So early losses were probably about 5x costlier in men than they could have been).

Now I can't imagine the losses are racking up as fast.

Adopt the attitude that life is an uncurable sexually trasmitted disease and everything else is a bonus.

Probably linear forecasting which is bad.
