Irpin evacuation: Family killed as they fled

We have more information about the three civilians known to have been killed while trying to flee Irpin, a town just outside Kyiv.

A highly distressing image taken by a photographer for the New York Times show three members of a family of four - a mother and two children - lying dead on the pavement, while Ukrainian soldiers try to save the life of the wounded father.

We're not publishing the picture here due to its extremely graphic nature.

The children were a teenaged son and a daughter who appeared to be about eight years old, the newspaper reports.

The family had run from the fighting carrying a suitcase and a few backpacks and had brought their small dog with them.

They were hit by a mortar attack.

Russian forces have been firing mortar shells at an already-collapsed bridge being used by evacuating civilians, including children.

Ukraine has accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting the evacuation routes from Irpin, after a railway track was hit and damaged on Saturday.

As well as Irpin, the small towns of Hostomel and Bucha to the north-west of Kyiv have seen heavy fighting in recent days.

Is Europe just going to standby and watch Putin murder innocent civilian woman and kids, right on their door step, the video is heart breaking.

Thread has entered Tory bashing mode again I see. Lol

It's getting really old now Jamie.. you still don't get it it's not about political parties it's about the government we have now doing the right things, no one cares what party they belong to unless they have some ties to them. You are now clearly trolling everyone here that says anything against this government, we live in a country of free speech and have the rights to call out any of our government no matter what party they belong to.

Honestly today I'm shocked to see how some of our long term members on this forum have behaved with zero compassion to the events of these suffering people and think it is okay for our government to make them suffer more, yes I want checks and all the things that need to be done to protect our country and our civilians, but ask yourself one thing.. didn't our government know we will soon have a refugee issue and we should setup safe places for them while we work out their paperwork in the UK and under security while helping these people stay safe, warm and fed, they are women and children 99% of them if not more ? They have done nothing and anyone that says they have show me the proof and stop spreading fake news.

To all the people in the forums saying the right things and keeping the thread updated with events, you know who you all are, thank you and keep it up. Mods thank you for keeping this topic in order too, I know it must be hard not to just nuke some of these posts but I believe in free speech and want to hear all sides, but can we please have a little more control over the people trolling others in such a horrible situation that we are all emotionally involved in and some think it's funny to wind people up.

Just a little reminder ..

Russia is deliberately declaring humanitarian corridors then targeting civilians who try to use them.

No more.

It's time for the Western nations to enter the war to defend Ukraine. If Russia launches then so be it. We cannot let this go on the basis of (likely empty) threats.

Here Here, and public opinion seems to be heading that way

That is genocide

The EU, Nato, the West whatever you want to call them played their hand and lost.

The price is Ukraine and civilian deaths. Whatever happens now this is never going back to how things were, but there are many ways to de-escalate this before it goes too far. Most will involve conceding territory to Russia.

We called his bluff that he would never go in. For now he holds all the cards and dictates how things go.

NATO will not attack but will defend. Even if something does happen outside Ukraine it doesn't automatically mean nukes and WW3

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/06/world/europe/ukraine-irpin-civilian-death.html link to the news article for all that need to see what is happening to civilians today that are trying to flee. Some here need to see as they think it is some video game or a movie and forget real people are dying and innocent people that have nothing to do with this war. All they want is to flee and go to a safe place and this is what is happening to them.

Yes sorry today I am really upset by all of this and upset a lot by some of the posts by people on these very forums and shocked by their view of the world and saddened by how heartless some are, put yourself in their shoes for one moment and then reply, imagine that was your loved ones and family.

Its one thing to be in favour of action, another to be prepared to take the consequences.

We can't live in fear of Putin threatening to nuke the west every time things don't go his way. The fact that we have nuclear weapons in Europe does make me feel more confident though, I do question how far the US would let Russia go if we didn't have the capability to defend ourselves.
