I suspect it is our British mentality that we tend to lump everybody together as being the same and ignore the ethic difference that they themselves will tell you exists. For example, that the Uyghur's in China are just the same as all Chinese.

I would imagine the difficulties come about because in the UK the word ethnicity has been used in place of/or associated with race. When it doesn't really have to have anything to do with race. In terms of 'ethnic' Russians its meaning is more cultural.

Suprising that 1960's land-fired rockets could take down a pretty much new battleship! Is that oridnarily possible or just an almost one-off amazing shot?
I would have a sneaky feeling the west has given them some kink of hand held or launch from a small boat type of missile or torpdo that fits the job of putting a big hole in a boat under the water line.

The ordinance of the USA, GB, and France is pretty sophisticated these days.

One things for sure they won't be sailing so close to shore anymore. It may even put any landing from those ships in doubt.

Putin 2008: "Crimea is not a disputed territory. There has been no ethnic conflict there, unlike the conflict between South Ossetia and Georgia. Russia has long recognized the current borders of today's Ukraine. In general, we have actually completed the negotiations on the border. It's all about demarcation, that is, about purely technical things. In my opinion, the question of Russia's goals of this kind has a provocative meaning. Too complicated processes are going on in Crimean society: the problem of the Crimean Tatars, Ukrainian, Russian and Slavic people in general - this is, however, a domestic political problem of Ukraine itself. We have an agreement with Ukraine on the stay of our fleet in Sevastopol by 2017. We will be guided by this contract."

Surely he respects country's borders...as long as there's his puppet behind that border (Yanukovych at a time).
Unlike now an American puppet that sells his country https://www.theguardian.com/news/20...dent-offshore-connections-volodymyr-zelenskiy

1 Pound to 200 Rubles now, it keeps getting worse for them. I'm looking forward to the day they finally open up their stock market and the typical Russian gets to comprehend a bit more about the consequences of their country's actions.

Incredible. But I genuinely hope the Russian sailors manged to get off before it went down. I'll probably be called a Russian bot for that comment but many of the Russians probably don't want to be fighting either.
They were fighting whether they really wanted to or not, by not refusing to fight they were contributing towards the invasion and death of innocent civilians. I hope they were trapped and slowly drowned.

Accounts like @SQHQ are so odd.

Spends a couple of years (2018/19) pretty much posting in nothing other than threads about monitors and then pops up in this thread posting a video of a Russian military official claiming the Americans are building biological warfare facilities in Ukraine, some waffle about MSM and fake news, then onto Zelenskiy is an American puppet because he has some offshore accounts.

Maybe its the alternate account of a more prolific poster, I know for a fact that there are many people on here who have 2nd accounts that they post more controversial stuff on , so that they dont get their "main" account banned.

One of Enkore's many alt's perhaps.

Certainly strange to have a handful of posts and then all of a sudden be active and spouting nonsense in the Ukraine thread.

This is a fast moving thread, but just a thought. If Russia withdraws now, despite the heavy losses, they must know that the rebuilding of Ukraine and the consequent re-arming will mean that they will have an openly hostile anti-Russian neighbour who may yet join the EU and Nato.

Any chance Russia has to annex further land will be gone for generations... Vlad must be calculating that he may as well prosecute a bloody bitter war now rather than concede and create the very thing he was wailing against (an anti-Russia neighbour being used as a vehicle to punish mother Russia)?

Funnily enough there was a tweet saying the US didn't expect there to be any type of amphibious assault in the Odessa region.

I think Russia has screwed this up big time. Once the dust has settled, if Ukraine becomes and EU member and rebuilds its economy, it has the potential to overtake Poland. So up from $160bn gdp to probably over $600bn given its vast resources and access to the EU. Obviously that would take decades, but would put them in a much stronger position financially. Not to mention the new military equipment and contracts they will be able to take out by being a friendly nation, and the military experience and training they will have.

Yes, I would agree. It is not a problem or issue to recognise the cultural/ethnic differences per se, the problems can start when saying one group is intrinsically worse or better than the other.

The article literally says they are threatening to hold up aid to Ukraine, in some cases because they want it separated from other legislation. If they cared enough, they would want that aid to go through as quickly as possible, regardless of any riders.

"which may include emergency aid to Ukraine — over concerns about excessive spending and vaccine mandates."

"May" being the optimum word here. Unless you have clear evidence to prove other wise.

My colleague has driven out to Ukraine this week to rescue their family. Absolutely heartbreaking.

You mean other than the indiscrimite slaughter of innocent civillians in their home and running to the borders for safety.

Whats more desperate than that? A tactical nuke, not going to happen, biological weopons, could do but being a neighbouring country it could blow back on them, although they would just blame Ukrain for using it on them.

But they are already as desperate as it gets.

They don’t appear to have used chemical weapons yet. Their track history doesn’t bode well on that one.

There’s no way he could have seen it panning out like this surely. I agree with you, if he pulls out of Ukraine that’s what will happen. The Ukrainians needs to push him out or it’ll go on for years.

Wasn't until today i was informed that the Russian Embassy in Dublin is on Orwell Street.
Found that amusing.

Speaking of which, Someone drove a truck through the Russian embassy gates in Dublin.

The embassy released a statement that included: "The incident is cause of extreme concern. We believe that no people of sound mind could support such senseless and barbaric actions’

The embassy of Russia, that has started a war and invaded another country, literally killing children in the process has said that...
