"Liberal Democracy"? - I give you Turkey, Poland, Hungary hell the UK is barely a liberal democracy any more

I use the term loosely, relative to Russia these are liberal democracies. The UK is far from a representative democracy because we don't have proportional representation, and we have taxation without representation, but compared to the Russian regime, it's night and day.

Here's a spicy red hot take. Fortunately it's been condemned by church leaders:

That sounds like something the DUP would come up with ?

They voted for him once. Every other "election" he has "won" has been a joke.

Yes. Yeltsin appointed Putin as his successor and his first act as President was to sign an order giving Yeltsin and his family immunity from prosecution (for all their fraudulent activities and embezzlement of state assets). Putin won his first election in 2000 on a tide of nationalism and a desire for revenge against the Chechens after the Moscow apartment bombings. He actually said in one speech: 'We will kill them [the Chechen leaders] even when they are in the s***house!' That rather sums up Putin's gangsteresque attitude.

During that period of terrorism, residents of an apartment building in Ryazan called the police about intruders in their basement and they were caught red-handed with a bomb. However, they were released when they identified themselves as FSB agents who were doing a 'training exercise'. Subsequently, all details of this episode were classified as top secret for 75 years! It seems that false flag attacks to justify brutal wars and enhance his popularity have been part of Putin's strategy for a long time.

This sums up some of my concerns around our current strategy, I'm not sure that sanctions are enough: https://time.com/6155990/russia-ukraine-invasion-deterrence/

Yeah. The West should be setting red lines for Russia not the other way round.

Starting point: these are escape corridors, you bomb them, mine them, or fire on the planes we send to defend them, then we join the war on Ukraine's side and destroy every Russian asset in the country or that fires on the country.

Poor, poor people. No matter what we’ve all seen on the TV and social media, we can’t even imagine the suffering these people are enduring. Todays horrific shelling of the childrens hospital just makes me feel enough is enough. How can the western world sit back and watch this happen? If it means WW3 so be it. Yes many more people will suffer but we’ll all be in it together for the right reasons.

I understand all the political and tactical ********, but just feels like we need to see the bigger picture here. The innocent Ukrainians are screaming out for our help and, despite the sanctions and our pathetic efforts to offer them refuge, we aren’t there for these incredibly brave people. Shame on us and the rest of the western world.

Sorry to be so melodramatic but it’s really got to me today

God, I would so love it if we could go in and absolutely slaughter the *****

If Putin wasn't hiding behind his nukes their pathetic army would have been annihilated on day 2. One of the so called most powerful armies in the world resorting to terrorising civilians, they're an army of terrorists.

It's odd how the US would have been happy backing Poland had they sent them directly but not happy if they were sent via a US airforce base in Germany...

Doesn't actually look good for NATO - if Russia had retaliated and carried out a strike on Polish territory would that have been something the US wouldn't have actually responded to vs if they'd struck at a US airbase in Germany?

Putin won his first election in 2000 on a tide of nationalism
It was hardly a tide, he only got 53% of the votes, against almost no opposition, it was basically him versus the communist party (who managed 30% mostly on the basis of being the only opposition to him). Hell if you factor in turnout only 36% of voters actually bothered to vote for him.

Of course his popularity "improved" once he got in and future elections could be run better :P

Have to agree with the above.
Time to take the gloves off and stop being weak.

Will the west ever 'convert' Russia, bring it into the fold like they're trying to do with Ukraine. Once the old communist gaurd die out, will there ever be enough will and momentum to completely change Russia to become more aligned with EU or Western thinking?

I'm not saying it should change but I'm genuinely wondering if we will see a revolution in Russia in the coming years?

I can't see it happening in our lifetimes. For things like that to happen requires many generations. Even upto now Russian propaganda is to hate the west.

The news had a fair bit of coverage yesterday about the incoming arctic blast. You've obviously got a lot of soliders outside - on both sides. Then with all the bombing a lot of cities are not able to provide any heating. It could certainly change the course of this war.
