No-one is going to be attacking Ukraine again in a hurry. This is probably the only concession Ukraine can give right now and they can always join in the long-term future.
True, but it is something they wanted to do pre invasion, and if it’s something they actually want then it shouldn’t be surrendered to enable the Russians to save face, especially as they started this.

It is in the US interest for this conflict to carry on. It's causing Russia to grind much of its assets. They get to watch Russia's tactics, they get to study how western weapons fare against them. They get to see Russia's economy hurt. The US are probably loving this.

Yep, and the money it'll make from arms sales, haven't Germany already expressed a desire to purchase more aircraft? I imagine a fair bit of Europe will be shopping for deals after this.

It wouldnt surprise me if you see a new alliance between Poland and other baltic states. Ukraine is then not in NATO, however if any of the NATO countries are attacked as a result of their alliance with Ukraine then it opens up the doors.

Confuse Moscow by calling it the Warsaw Pact.

Sanctions will remain and in the next year or so start to bite. I do not think that Russia will be in a position for foreign excursions and remain inwardly focused on the economy and security. If Putin lasts until 2026 which I doubt, he will be deposed in the elections that year.

Ukraine never was in a position to join NATO in the first place. It's farming sympathy at the moment but it always was a corrupt country that could never make the grade for NATO or the EU.

At best it might have got some arms length association like Turkey has with the EU despite Turkey banging on the door to get in for a really long time.

The only reason NATO membership is even being thought about is due to Putin being off his meds. Or on them.

Russia’s getting desperate. The chief Ukrainian demand should be that Russia changes it’s name to Ukraine Junior.

I wonder if they made another miscalculation about this 'freedom of speech' rhetoric, presumably they mean to abuse it to proselytise the Russian speakers in Ukraine into thinking the country deserved it and that actually all the damage was Kyiv's fault.

Those people have lived relatively peaceful lives with liberties that Russian's can't even fathom in Ukraine up until Russia decided to lob rockets into their homes, I'm highly doubtful that Moscow will find much purchase with this just like they didn't find much purchase finding people to implement a coup for 8 years straight.

Like!

I was wondering something similar

No reason Poland etc could not sign some sort of mutual defence pact with Ukraine. Although its possible there is a NATO clause to exclude this.

Its a bit too familiar european countries signing pacts though on the basis of aggression or perceived aggression.

Russia (assuming which is a big one that they do pull back) will need to be very careful on how they get anything worded.
Its certainly not too far fetched to see forward defensive positions of NATO forces in Ukraine as some sort of lease deal. Or forces that happen to be on exercise permanently on friendly non NATO soil.

You could see it as an easy concession to make for Ukraine. They were years away from joining. Ukraine was as corrupt as they come but they were working on it. Another reason for Putin to kick off at them as they were cleaning up their act so any influence he had under the radar was ebbing away.

And, as we've seen, Ukraine doesn't really need to join NATO.
