Skip 4000 series wait for 5000 series?

I have a 3080 Ti, Granted I play at 3840x1600 but my main games are Star Wars The Old Republic and Final Fantasy XIV, Both play maxed out at over 100FPS so unless either of them gets a massively demanding graphical upgrade I'm not upgrading my GPU anytime soon, Mix that with the rumour of the 4080 and up being massively power hungry, Pricing will be ludicrous and that's before the online stores start their price gouging so I'll either wait for the 5000 series or use what I have until it gives up the ghost, I refuse to pay for a decent GPU what I paid for my current GPU, The price was ridiculous.

I thought "buying GPU's is a form of therapy" for you. Are you sure you can manage without that therapy?

Honestly, the fact that people think possessions make them happy boggles the mind. If it has utility that is greater than the cost, then buy it. If you're doing it for status or to make you feel good you're 100% going to end up depressed.

Literally all the science says that having more stuff makes you unhappy. 10 minutes of excitement and then the realisation it's just a GPU.

You know what would make more sense at this point?

Skip 3000 series wait for 4000 series!

I'm still running a 1080 Ti so I'm going to take a good look at 4000 series cards. But if they're ludicrously expensive and require me to purchase my own nuclear power station, I'll probably end up purchasing whatever deal I can get on a 3000 series card instead.

This dude is gonna sell his 3080 12GB at a massive loss losing a ****load of cash then will go for the new gen, absolutely no doubt.

You don't need Marty's time machine to work that out lol... Let's hope Mr financed 3080 is payed off by then so I can finance another.

Probably not to be honest. I'll start to get really jealous when 4080's start appearing. Will wait to see what 4080 TDP is first though and just how much of a performance improvement it offers.

It's not so much about having more possessions than it is having the best tech and not being "obsolete" by having older tech / lesser models.

It makes me happy to own such a powerful graphics card.

That's only for patient people. Not impulsive people that want the latest/greatest bad boy editions in their machine right now!

Hell naw... That's too long to wait without having the greatest bad boy editions right now!
I had a 3080 on release and then sold that for a nice amount after a while and got my 3070. The 3000 series is kind of getting old now. Soon I will be rocking a 4070 "bad boy edition" which will be hopefully whopping even the 3090 :D

I sold my 3070 at a loss and payed more than double for my 3080. I guess I just really wanted a 3080 at the start of this generation but couldn't get one. Now I ended up with what I originally wanted near the end of this generation. I am finally satisfied until a 4080 exists then I will be discontent again. :o

Lol. I don't really care for what the name of the card is. I had my 3080 for like 7 months at which point I had already played all the demanding games in my steam library. It was an easy decision selling it to CEX for £1615. Then picked up my 3070 FE which has played everything I have wanted to ever since. I now fancy new tech :)

I’ll be skipping, got my Evga 3080 XC3 for below rrp and it’s been solid. I don’t play enough to warrant upgrading right now.

I'm not skipping and will go from a 3090 to a 4090. I used to not be able to afford all the latest kit and used to have to settle for some budget option but now I have more money than sense and love to get all the latest stuff and especially the latest GPUs. If you have the patience then its a good skip to go to the 5xxx series as at the very least the semiconductor shortage should be over.

How Much Longer Will It Take to Fix the Chip Shortage?
March 14, 2022
The global chip shortage is entering its second year, and there are a lot of variables complicating the recovery.

The Global Fight Over Chips Is About to Get Even Worse
Sanctions are causing a shortage of microchips in Russia. Meanwhile, the U.S. and Europe are spending billions in a race with China that could easily backfire.

Exclusive: Russia's attack on Ukraine halts half of world's neon output for chips
WASHINGTON, March 11 (Reuters) - Ukraine's two leading suppliers of neon, which produce about half the world's supply of the key ingredient for making chips, have halted their operations as Moscow has sharpened its attack on the country, threatening to raise prices and aggravate the semiconductor shortage.

With Ukraine war and Covid-19 surge in China, chip shortage worsens
Wait times hit a record-high 26.2 weeks in February, and have likely gotten longer since then.

+ these factories are not even built yet .. they take years to build and start producing anything, this shortage is not going away as soon as you think.

I said should not would! I don't have a crystal ball so speculating any further like you have would be pointless but fun. The semiconductor shortage will ease up from the end of the year based on what Lisa Su has said in the link below.

I'll probably be moving from 2070S to something like 3070Ti or 3080, skipping 4000 entirely.

2070S is still solid enough at 1440p, I reckon something from the 3000 series will last me a good while provided I can get anything at a normal price.

I'm afraid the prices will only go up because of recent events, that's why I made a jump to Alder Lake from Haswell before everything gets even more expensive.

Maybe I'll be able to grab a 3000 series before 4000 release.

That was before the world changed again what Lisa said in September 2021..

Intel CEO warns chip shortage to last until 2023 as demand soars

That was December 2021.

https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/S...p-shortage-to-last-until-2023-as-demand-soars

Estimated dates have all gone out of the window now and even this year the chip delays are getting worse each month, even from February 2022 they were saying over 6 months delay for mature nodes, so new nodes (6nm/5nm) will end up being worse for sure (what gpus use) even 7nm is all booked up for years ahead.
