Skip 4000 series wait for 5000 series?

I think it's a given that 4000 series will be massively more power efficient than 3000 series with the move from Samsung back to TSMC. People are saying they'll stay away because they'll be "power hungry", but that will only be if pushed to the limit. There will be more performance for less power, comfortably.
Power draw is the last thing I'm worried about. Even if they are pushed to the limits from factory you can always down-volt and maintain 90% of performance while saving tons on wattage.

I'll probably skip 4000, the prices are availability will still be horrendous.

I'm not buying another Nvidia card anyway, ever. Not that I think AMD are saints by any stretch of the imagination but Nvidia clearly sorted out all the miners and left the dregs for their loyal customer base at double the price.

I appreciate there is a bit more to it than that, but I didn't see them taking any action whilst their profits soared.

I'll build a new system around a 4080. Or possibly a 4080ti, timescale depending.

Skipping a generation after the 1080ti I currently have probably won't be worth it :/ . That card is starting to struggle in VR, after 7+ years!

The couple of generations after the 1080 haven't been worth my while in the bangs for buck considerations. But the next gen may be, I hope. Even with the potential £1k plus pricing.

A new system build beckons...

So is anyone else that has just bought a top-tier 3000 series card (3080/3080Ti/3090) planning on skipping 4000 series? Hopefully i'll be able to hold the temptation for 2 years with my 3080 that I just purchased for £1250.

According to Nvidia's GPU roadmap the 5000 series would be released sometime in 2024. That's only 2 years away. If the 4000 series is good just imagine what the 5000 series would be like. I'm sure it will be much more power efficient to begin with as there are rumors 4080+ cards will require a 1000Watt PSU.

Let's imagine these forums 2 years from now. Would you wait for 5000 series or plan to go straight to 4000 in September and sell your top-tier 3000's for nickels on the dime in a mad rush to get a Lovelace card?

The only time you should upgrade is if you're unhappy with your current card's performance in whatever new games are out, the card doesn't have enough VRAM for new games, or the card breaks and can't be RMA'd successfully.
If the only game(s) you play, for example, is Valorant and League of Legends, and you plan on playing those games for the next 5 years, why would you upgrade? It's not like the games are suddenly going to run slower when a new card comes out. (unless a massive engine overhaul occurs, e.g. Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition--and even then--in game settings STILL exist...).
Upgrade when you actually need new hardware, not because your eyes start bulging at someone's world record FPS scores and you start feeling left out and depressed.
Unless you're extremely rich of course and money has little meaning to you due to a very secure lifestyle, then just buy whatever hardware comes out and bench it.

I'm buying the 4000 series on release then waiting year's to upgrade to 6000/7000 series, but if you got a 3080 or higher no need to upgrade for a few year's yet.
Gamer's love wasting money by upgrading too fast but if you got the money to burn go ahead.

True.. I went from a 980ti to 3090s. I didn't think at the time anything was worth it to update for gaming at the time. When MSFS2020 came out then I was looking to update for gaming reasons. The 3090s in my system in SLI/NVLINK are for work 99% of the time (purchased because lockdowns and working from home then and couldn't use the office at work) and the odd bit of gaming that is mostly flight sims, rest of the games I play on and off when I have time or in the mood for something new.

I only find it worth upgrading now for gaming if it is a 2x+ in performance otherwise it's not worth the hassle, time or money as by then the full system will need an update too to take advantage of the gpu upgrade.

10mins 32 seconds in, on that video, his medical issue is in fact he's a compulsive gambler and owed bookies and loan companies £50,000

Yes it's sad really, I saw that and was like well your problem and you are nothing more than a common crook in my books, all scalpers are in my book what ever reason they have. Some play the ohh I did it because I can't live on the money I have blaa blaa but you have money to buy 100's of expensive items that you scalp.
