They've got 6-7 big assault ships and a lot more smaller ones in the Black Sea and trying to bring 4 more apparently though ostensibly the Bosphorus is closed to military traffic.

Really hope you're right. But he does have relatively limitless resources of dirty weaponry or ideas (like bombing a power station and blaming it on Ukraine) to fall back on. And there appears to be no shortage of aircraft prepared to launch cruise missiles from safety, or soldiers to fire artillery from their front lines.

Maybe it's just a kind of emotional insurance, trying to be aware that things could look better than they really are. The whole edifice might be a paper tiger backed by nukes with a 50/50 chance of going off in their launch silos due to bad maintenance (or NATO sabotage as it would be described). Or perhaps it's just that significant elements of the armed forces (away from the action) are trying not to be too efficient because they see the insanity of what's happening. But you can't rely on that being true or continuing to be true... though I really hope it is.

Sitting ducks and I'd suspect a beach landing would amount to suicide. Javelin has a 2.5km range and law 800m - pretty much any tin cans are open targets. Not to mention any anti-ship missiles or batteries.

Putin may only be listening to Turkey because it has closed the link that he needs for his ships from the med..

Or human resources. Someone once asked Stalin about the horrendous losses the Red Army was taking and he replied "its not a problem, we have plenty of people"

I think people are buying a bit too much into the hype/Western bias - what seems to be hampering the Russian military efforts as much as anything appears to be paranoia on the part of Putin to commit the better forces. Albeit it is also appears true that half their military budget it tied up in marinas in the Mediterranean.

EDIT: Also as per Blackjack Davy's post above albeit they don't have quite the same scale of people and resources these days.

Is that diplomatic for - they're aligned that they know each other's wants and 'halfway there' seems russia wants but isn't getting? *shrug*

Diplomatic nuances = differences of options so no progress.

So basically nothing seems to be agreed.

I'm not foolish enough to claim one side has won or lost when it's clearly ongoing and the likely way it will end is through peace talks and Ukraine making concessions.

Why don't they show images of the rescue like they did with the hospital that seemed to contain 1 woman?

it's incredibly hard to know what's absolute propaganda and what's actually true.

The first casualty of war is always the truth.

something makes me think if hundreds or thousands of people were really trapped there would be footage of the rescue by now, it's been about 4 days?

We get articles and headlines based on what's essentially hearsay and everyone just accepts it's the truth.

it seems like an atrocity they should be showing off to the world to pressure russia into a ceasefire or whatever, but instead it's just silence and no one bothers to question it.

I have seen plenty of footage of the Russian's deliberately targeting civilians.

So they're basically getting desperate, and completely don't care how they are perceived anymore.

What do you guys think, will they be able to come up with a diplomatic solution? Or how do you see this panning out otherwise.

Russia is finished financially. Putin has pretty much dug his own grave, he's chosen the hill he will die on.

Edit... There is no way the EU will back down. The USA certainly won't back down.

We look after our friends, we don't throw them away.

They've been doing that for the past week.
They don't need to march soldiers to their deaths since Ukraine doesn't really have a way of stopping the bombardment.

What some people here do not seem to grasp is that the sooner Zelensky can negotiate a peace deal the less concessions he will need to make.

It's easy for people here saying Ukrainians should fight to the death as it isn't their lives that are getting lost, it isn't their wives and daughters looking for random strangers to live with in another country, it isn't their country that is getting blown to bits.

They have a hate for Putin but want other people to lose their lives fighting him.

An earlier peace deal would have been much more beneficial for Ukraine, look at how much damage has been done.
Now there is a good chance not only will Putin demand Ukraine not become part of NATO but also he may take a chunk of the country too.
Accepting Ukraine not join NATO alone would be seen as a loss for Putin after committing so much, he will want more.
