'President Xi told Biden the new major developments in the intl landscape since their last virtual meeting. The prevailing trend of peace & development is facing serious challenges. The world is neither tranquil nor stable. The Ukraine crisis is not something we want to see.'
'The events again show that countries should not come to the point of meeting on the battlefield. Conflict and confrontation are not in anyone’s interest, and peace and security are what the international community should treasure the most.'
'As permanent members of the UN Security Council and the world’s two leading economies, wemust not only guide the China-US relations forward along the right track, but also shoulder our share of international responsibilities and work for world peace and tranquility.'

*Lebanon’s Hezbollah Chief Nasrallah Denies Sending Fighters, Experts to Fight Alongside Russia in Ukraine -Lebanese Al Mayadeen TV

What some people here do not seem to grasp is that the sooner Zelensky can negotiate a peace deal the less concessions he will need to make.

Utter nonsense. To get favourable terms for a peace treaty the Ukrainians have to fight them to a standstill. If they can inflict enough casualties and damage on them then they will have bargaining leverage because Putin will want to stop the war as soon as he can.

The problem is that Russia doesn't obey its peace treaties. It has no honour. It wiped its arse with the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 and the Minsk Agreement. I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them.

It's easy for people here saying Ukrainians should fight to the death as it isn't their lives that are getting lost, it isn't their wives and daughters looking for random strangers to live with in another country, it isn't their country that is getting blown to bits.

They have a hate for Putin but want other people to lose their lives fighting him.

I would never say the Ukrainians should fight to the death if their only way to survive is to surrender. It is possible to surrender if you don't stand a chance in a conventional war and then pursue an armed insurgency against the enemy's occupying forces like the French Resistance did against the Nazis and the Afghan Mujahideen did against the Soviets.

An earlier peace deal would have been much more beneficial for Ukraine, look at how much damage has been done.
Now there is a good chance not only will Putin demand Ukraine not become part of NATO but also he may take a chunk of the country too.
Accepting Ukraine not join NATO alone would be seen as a loss for Putin after committing so much, he will want more.

You sound like Lord Halifax in 1939 when he was talking about why we should not resist Hitler. If the Ukrainians had gone for an early peace deal then the Russians would have insisted on an unconditional surrender. Assuming that the Russians didn't just annex the whole of Ukraine and make it Russian territory governed from Moscow, which was probably Putin's intention, they would be absolutely helpless against a future Russian military takeover because they would be forced to demilitarise.

The whole business about blocking Ukraine's NATO membership was a disingenuous excuse by Putin anyway. The Ukrainian application for NATO membership was withdrawn in 2010 and its government officially adopted non-aligned status. The policy to join NATO was only adopted again AFTER Russia invaded and took over Crimea and instigated unrest in the Donbass causing the formation of the DPR and the LPR (de facto Russian territories). Putin effectively forced a neutral country to try to join NATO. He then had the insolence to use them wanting to join NATO, as a direct result of his actions, as a reason to invade them!

How come russias economy is improving? The ruble is getting stronger today?
There are ways you can offset a declining currency, You buy it

The central bank will be pumping the reserves into it to prop it up, they can use any assets like gold and diamonds to do the same thing.

Interest rate rises are also a tactic

The chances are that their allies like China, Iran, India etc are also buying it to try and stabalise it

it's short term though, when this happens if the situation doesn't improve it will drop again.

It won't improve here because the sanctions wont allow it to so it's just really buying time until default.

How come russias economy is improving? The ruble is getting stronger today?

Rouble exchange rate is no longer a reflection of the Russian economy. Heavy sanctions are at play. Capital controls were introduced. In simple terms the rouble exchange rate is not governed by the free market. Moreover rouble even before 24th of February was valued at 1/3rd of it's fundamental value, so there's less room to fall (aside from short term spikes). As long as Europe is buying Russian gas there is enough money for the Russian budget and as such fiscal stability.

If you want to see effects of sanctions then look at projected GDP contraction.

The vehicle was a Strela-10, an anti-aircraft missile launcher.

It is used by both Russia and Ukraine, if it was Russian do you honestly believe it was driving around alone in Kyiv the capitol of Ukraine without any escort so early in the invasion.
To do what protect Ukrainian Skies ?
Surely if the driver was Russian he would not be wearing a Ukrainian uniform and would have fled the scene after the collision.

Fair enough. None of those details were reported on the TV news report I saw at the time. An example of media bias I suppose. We do have to be aware of incidents being deliberately misrepresented in war. Amnesty International have documented many other attacks on civilians by Russian forces though.

How come russias economy is improving? The ruble is getting stronger today?

Several reasons: they've taken a lot of steps to prop up their currency; high gas and oil prices actually boost their GDP even while everything productive they do tanks; and news of progress in talks means some of the market believes the war will end early (and, presumably, they also believe this will mean an easing of sanctions).

Goodness me the stadium event in Russia today was ridiculous. It's like a weird parody of Trump, Hitler, and Eurovision Song Contest.

Even in the scenario of Putin being deposed, it feels like there are huge ideological problems in Russia.

They NEED to come up with a diplomatic solution. Zelensky will have to swallow the bitter, illegal pill

Ermmm.. that will be a firm no from me.

Russia needs to back the chuff off, or face harder consequences.

Putin started this fight, and he'll end up dead unless he backs off.

I’m the one claiming that most artillery and bombing isn’t indiscriminate. Munitions are far too expensive and a pain to transport to the front line to fire off at random or to target a passing civilian.
They are fired with some accuracy at enemy troops or where they are trying to capture. Often cover… which is often buildings/ houses. Mauripol is flattened because it’s being constantly fought over. Not for lol’s by bored squaddies with nothing better to do.

Pilots risking their lives daily to randomly bomb a house somewhere? Cmon.
You really are clueless or just playing at it.

It's already been established they are indiscriminately using dumb bombs on civillian targets so don't give us that rubbish.

They do us guided weapons but it's funny how they always seem to hit military bases air ports etc I.E legimimite targets isn't it?

All of this insanity and death just because Russian constitution had the word "consecutively" for president position. If in 1993 they could have been a bit smarter and chose clearer wording, Putin would not have been eligible to be elected for the 3rd time (he did not have the same control to for constitutional changes back then) and none of this would have happened. Absolutely crazy to think that such minor choice of words back in '93 led to so much suffering.

Yea and it looks exactly like the kind of far right idiots Trump gets at his rallies, blindly following with no brains.

A mate of mine in the UK, his wife went to a swimming pool last week.
Fire alarm went off. They got everyone outside asap.

Freezing cold, 3 of them standing there with towels, a lady came up to them and said she lived round the corner would they like to come over, warm up and head back later to collect their belongings.

Anyway, when they were leaving, my mates wife said "you have a lovely accent, where are you from?"
Nervous, she replied, "Russian" and then broke down in tears.
