*Italy Ecology Minister Cingolani: It’s Hard to Replace Russian Gas Dependence for at Least 2 Years.

This is something which annoys me - we need to break out of conventional thinking to come out on top in this situation - use the collective power of the West to solve these situations and make sure we spread/offset the burden throughout so smaller entities don't get obliterated by trying to comply with measures against Russia and/or otherwise deal with the fallout of this situation, etc.

Otherwise when it comes to a contented situation Russia vs the West over impact of sanctions we are going to break before they do.

Simple solution to the PoW issue. You hold them at the nearest hospital, or other large building, and place a few mannequins on the roof with used NLAW tubes. Let the Russians sort the problem out for you. ;)

(Think you typo'd there?)

This is why picking sanctions to maximise pain on Russia and minimise pain on the West matters. Throwing massive sanctions against Oil and Gas which will do little to harm Russia (prices will go up and they'll go right ahead and sell elsewhere at these prices) but significantly harm (parts of) the West making maintaining sanctions very difficult.

That was my point - Russia is more used to weathering sanctions and the like than we are - it might look grim for them now but if we try to match them blow for blow in the long run without being smart about it the West as a whole is going to fold before Russia does. People just don't like being inconvenienced in this country or the West as a whole, have complacency as to the longer term and will quickly forget why these measures are in place.

If you want the enemy to surrender, surrender (and subsequent treatment of POW's) needs to be more palitable than fighting to the death.

There was a German WW2 general (I forget who) who said something along the lines of: “A good soldier always knows when he should surrender. That way he can live in to kill his enemy another day”.

This is also sadly the reason the west did pretty much nothing but sit and watch Russia prepare it's invasion for months/weeks before launching it. It's true western politicians didn't care before Putin gave the go command however the reason for that is because the western public didn't care either, and telling the public "we need to do X because Russia is going to do Y" would only end up in tanking opinion polls.

@arknor - All these people are suffering and all you're thinking of are conspiracy theories. Perhaps you're just ill-informed.

Still very silent on the 2000 dead. Up to 2000 dead. Current confirmed casualties is?
Mariupol's city council said on Telegram that "according to initial information, there are no dead. But there is information about one person gravely wounded."

Russia doesn't have any way to match sanctions "blow for blow".

One of the things I think western governments are going to have to get to grips with is fab plants. There needs to be some fab in western europe (there used to be some in what was east germany but i think its gone now)

Chips being able to be produced locally from fab plants is basically critical for modern weaponry.

Imagine for one minute WW3 could be fought will all modern tech apart from nukes (ie conventional but with modern weaponry) those chips would be one the winning/losing factors

Russia doesn't have any way to match sanctions "blow for blow".

But the more effective sanctions also have an impact the other way to implement such as cutting off gas and there is going to be a lot of impact from separating entangled interests with some people and companies much more hit by it than others, etc. Russian money and interests are everywhere.

To keep the pressure up on Russia is going to mean much more widespread sanctions, etc. ongoing and some of that is going to be felt the other way - and we need to be smart about that.

That's why the proceeds of crime laws and the new one are worded such that it doesn't have to be in someone's name - complicated structures are irrelevant if they can find even the slimmest evidence that the sanctioned person or their family are the main beneficiary if such an arrangement, and they can't rent out or sell the property until they declare who the beneficiary is (which can't be a company name)

In which country? Also don't forget the wealthy (especially with ill-gotten gains) will buy a home or yacht and instantly get an equity line of credit on it at super low rates for as much as they can, then take the cash and put it elsewhere.
