Yeah I wouldn't be too sure on his interpretation or the logic of it, or what the official Russian position might be vs Putin's intentions and actions - sometimes they seem to try and hedge between a saner position without directly contradicting him.

I think the intent was pretty obvious, Putin is Russia.

That is a true reflection of the level of public policy making at the moment.

The West's sanctions for instance are undermining our long term position by showing that your money isn't safe in the West. Russian artists getting cancelled for being Russian and sanctions against individuals who are no doubt loathesome theives but aren't actually in any way responsible for the war.

They're responsible for exploiting Russia's degradation and constantly supporting a system that ensured outward aggression to maintain that grip.

Don't disagree but they're not responsible for the war. By expanding the realm of people against whom we will apply sanctions the unprecedented seizing of Russian overseas holdings and SWIFT bans we make it very clear that we are not reliable. Our politicians turn so quickly with the wind of public opinion to be seen doing something that I think in the long run we undermine our position.

edit: a few typos

It was being undermined anyway through Europe's natural tendencies to resist American hegemony along with rising powers (who are now technically in decline which is an accelerant) wanting to grab their own slice of the world, so the US could either continue to pretend it wasn't happening or force the issue.

This is a very interesting podcast

I learned a lot from it. Things that you don't pick up from mainstream media. Some key points are around the geo demographic decline in Russia. Along with underinvesting in their education system for decades they also aren't making enough little Russians, Population decline is going to be a huge issue for them particularly when it comes to maintaining a military. The brain drain as a result of the conflict might reverse but if it doesn't they are in real trouble. It's quite a long podcast but well worth a listen.

Not sure how long they can hold that out but pretty awesome effort trying.

reacting like this in an unprecented situtation makes us unreliable why ? it's shown a unity of purpose, usual rules do not apply

n an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday, Dmitry Peskov repeatedly refused to rule out that Russia would consider using nuclear weapons against what Moscow saw as an "existential threat." When asked under what conditions Putin would use Russia's nuclear capability, Peskov replied, "if it is an existential threat for our country, then it can be."
unfortunately there appears to be no video of this 'interview' to confirm the context - so we don't know if it was standard journalitic dogmatism, or just exploitation of their lesser english comprehension .. to make a sound bite.
