That is of course assuming Putin would actually have tried this if Trump was still in power. IMO if Trump had retained the presidency in 2020 then Putin would have had to postpone his invasion until 2024.

After all he took Crimea and part of Donetsk/Luhansk on Obama's watch then during Trump's reign he basically sat on his hands and did nothing except watch Ukraine build up it's defences, that would have been a much better time to strike however he was scared because one of Trump's first military acts was to humiliate Putin and the Russian military in Syria, after which he learnt not to "**** with crazy" again.

I don't see any specific reason why Putin would have decided to vary based on Biden. Given Trump was about retracting forces he would not be interesting in Putin's invasion. Other than it being an excellent fossil fuel sales opportunity for Trump.

I think Biden is understated, but don't assume not filling twitter with bile and venom is a weakness. Velvet glove, walk softly and carry a big stick. Biden seem more authoritative and it appears China doesn't view his communication as frivolous like Trump..

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he's working with Turkey and Greece on plans for a "humanitarian operation" to evacuate people from the devastated southern city of Mariupol. He said he hoped to speak to Russia's President Putin "within the next 48 to 72 hours" regarding the planned initiative. The port city of Mariupol lies in ruins after relentless Russian shelling. Tens of thousands remain trapped inside, with little access to food, water, electricity or gas. Macron told reporters there was a "concrete" discussion today with the mayor of Mariupol. "We are coordinating and we will then negotiate with the Russians," he said. Earlier, an official told the BBC that an estimated 300 people had died in last week's attack on a theatre in the city, where civilians had been sheltering.

Got it on the bbc live feed but will need to be agreed with the Russians so will have to see what happens

It's not only geo-locations that got these idiots killed, apparently The Wagner Group had a SF element in the area and they intercepted and triangulated the phone signals and relayed it to the Russian artillery.
What's SF element?

He's still a rat and Putin will again fool him if he tries to negotiate anything

Interesting. It seems to be a fairly common take that his efforts at diplomacy are more a negative trait then anything.

I think it's the opposite for me. Futile or not, I think any kind of dialogue is important and him making attempts to keep that channel open is relatively admirable.

Hate to say it, given I think Trump was an embarrassment as a U.S. president, but, he didn’t kick off any wars and I genuinely think he didn’t have a single adversary who thought not to think twice before acting whilst he was in the White House…..

A sad state of affairs when it takes the likes of him to ironically maintain peace and stability of sorts…..

Macron should just tell Vlad "Our boats are going to start docking there and evacuating citizens on {Time/Day}, if they're fired on they will respond", if he has the balls. Zero chance Putin will risk his ships in a suicidal battle with the French navy, especially when he's busy losing a land war against another country.

Trump was a good deterrent, just the right level of crazy - didn’t he launch cruise missiles into Syria at the first sight of chemical weapons being used? He was right about NATO too, they needed to step up and this right now is why.

Yeah wasn't that because they were about to expire tho? Lol

Think it's a bit different launching missiles at Syrian targets that aren't of much interest to the Kremlin versus literal Russian positions that are likely critical to any chance of success in a country literally bordering Russia.

No way to know if being more forceful will provoke Putin to stand down or escalate and that's not something that should be acted upon lightly.

Ukrainian farmers have cancelled growing wheat this year, they're growing tanks instead.
