We think the S300 & Buk are rubbish and no match for Russia but they're also really effective & we'd like more :confused::confused:

It's no different to the sanctions and embargo's put on Russia really

Probably a bit of a better than nothing situation.

One of the complications of getting the upper hand in the air though is that Russia can keep its S-400 systems and the likes in Belarus or Russia and still threaten the skies over Ukraine. Albeit those seem a bit crippled by the considerations for foreign civilian air traffic in surrounding countries - notice just how far into Russia most non-military air traffic is staying.

Aside from anti-missile/artillery systems some kind of theoretical STOL/VTOL multi-role aircraft, which is easily maintained and operated away from established facilities, with stand-off range air-to-air missiles and ground attack capabilities paired up with a network of highly mobile long range radar vehicles is what Ukraine really needs. Dunno how something like the Gripen would stack up for that use (Maybe another possibility for a British/Saab partnership LOL).

I mean to be fair they are fighting Russia on behalf of the rest of the West at this point, perhaps we should consider going beyond "defensive" aid?
To be fair, yeah the intel provided to the West over the last month has been priceless, complete demonstration of "modern" russian equipment, tactics and capability in clear detail, this entire conflict has been an absolute goldmine for western intelligence. The last month has been literally priceless for the west, its such a shame that Ukraine has had to pick up the cost of it...:( I would be happy to see large proportion of our foreign aid budget sunk into rebuilding Ukraine. Absolutely deserved!

Can pilots really be retrained to use F-16's effectively in just a few weeks?
You underestimate military courses... There is little you cant be taught in 4 weeks... You wont have experts at the end of it but you will have "functional" operators:cry:
Those who know, Know!

I mean, to be fair they arnt teaching them to fly, they would just be just teaching them the controls and nuances of that platform

They want American jets that don't support their language and they expect to be able to get the most out of it in 2 weeks

I didn't know you can learn English in 2 weeks
Lets be serious, They are likely asking for "X", but expecting "Y". Surely they know fine well they will never receive those jets in the current circumstances, maybe in the future when the conflict is over. but best they can expect is ex soviet era equipment when it comes to full on strike capable aircraft, which effectively means deals with ex-soviet bloc countries, which US has been major roadblock to so far. Lets face it US has pretty much said no to replacing any lost Soviet era aircraft, or at least no deal has yet to emerge. They sure as hell have been reluctanct to make that leap. I feal that the US see it as a step too far.

Because the MiG-29 and Su-27 possess similar characteristics to the F-16 and F-15 respectively and fulfil the same roles it makes changing between them much easier than you would expect.

The Ukrainian Air Force have been training with the USAF for years, hence why the USAF weren't surprised that when the war kicked off they turned out to be matching/beating the Russian Air Force despite using older planes. Most of the UAF pilots will have had a go in F-16 and/or F-15 trainers.

Training on a new jet type that's very similar to the type you're used to isn't actually a super hard as it sounds and historically can definitely be done in a few weeks. This is why you would see USAF pilots trained on F-16s quickly adapt to flying MiG-29s in exchange programs. When the Luftwaffe transitioned from MiG-29 to Eurofighter Typhoons in 2003 it took a little longer but again it was more a case of having to learn how the aircraft differed rather than learn everything about the aircraft.

But then peace time tends to be a lot more methodical, involve certification and covering health and safety aspects, etc. which will go out the window in a real war situation.

EDIT: Same with manufacturing if push comes to shove - people saying X missile takes months to build so impossible to supply in volume - but in a wartime scenario they can be pushing them together in days.

^^^ that

See the training on Starstreak, hard to use system and does require lots of practice but they condensed the training program down to as short a time period as possible for them.

They could, in theory, do the same for getting pilots up to speed on a different aircraft type.

They've been very resourceful so far re: the (limited) air force they have, obviously, the Russians have targeted air bases etc.. right away so instead they've been closing off roads/using stretches of motorways etc.. as ad hoc runways. (something Swiss motorways are specifically designed to be used for).

Can imagine some airforce types having a fit about the potential for foreign object damage etc.. but I guess extreme circumstances warrant it.

Yeah there's always a way, back when the Falklands kicked off the US were actively taking AIM-9L Sidewinders off of active aircraft and shipping them to us because they didn't have enough stock or production levels to arm all our Harriers xD

Well if anyone does send them aircraft, it would be best to send ones that don't need a runway because their airports are ****** and Russia will quickly bomb them again if they don't have proper anti air systems to protect it.

instead attack helicopters would be of better use than jets because they can landed and hidden in many places away from the airports. Jets would required them to be stored outside Ukraine in a neighbouring country or an aircraft carrier at sea.

And what I could also foresee being a risk is that sending them anti tank weapons, guns, bullets etc - it's all defensive equipment that allows Ukrainians to hopefully hold their positions and defend. Once you give them attacking weapons like Jets it's a whole other ball game, because now they can directly attack Russians behind the front line and even go bomb cities inside Russia and Russia would not be happy and May escalate this war

Wonder what all those Russian heavy transport flights between Murmansk and Kaliningrad are about - other than noting they are happening can't see much information or speculation online. Initially thought they were maybe pulling stuff out to use in Ukraine but with most heading to and from Murmansk that doesn't really add up.

Maybe moving nuclear related hardware? but in which direction.

Belgorod seems to be having some real ****** luck this week, First an ammo dump spontaneously combusts and now an oil depot follows suit too. Spooky coincidence.

Two Ukrainian attack helicopters entered Belgorod and launched missles at the facility

Slava Ukraine! Let's bomb more Russian cities!!

but this proves my point, it's a reason why the uS won't give them jets - can you imagine to seeing f-16 jets doing sorties in Russia!? Putin will lose his ****
