*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

updated my UDMP today and it now won't finish booting.

I can't access the control panel /portal and also can't download config backups via SCP as it refuses connections.

Really don't want to do a reset and go through all the setup again :o

From reading on the UBNT forums you are not alone and it looks like a full reset and recovery from backup is your best bet. The controller should have been making automatic backups so assuming you took any copies at all, you should be able to restore your system easily enough.

I checked the cloud portal and I have no backups there. Not sure where else there might be a back up.

Lesson learned. Make sure I have config backups and that I have SSH turned on, as I think that's what's stopping me connecting so I can download one.

Do you mind putting a link to a thread you've been reading on this?

Its the firmware release thread. You should always wait at least a week after a firmware goes general release and read the tales of woe from the early adopters then decide whether or not the new features/bug-fixes are worth playing update roulette or not.

I wasn't really paying that much attention and had done some updates to my NAS, so at the same time whilst in the Unifi control panel triggered an update.

It's fairly ****** that they are known for being so flaky, as i'm going to have to waste an hour or two sorting this out now...

It will backup to local storage. I'm not sure with the UDM whether you can configure subsequent upload to Google Drive or similar.

Yes, but if @Nutty_Death hasn’t copied those backups to another drive then the reset will not allow you to recover from them because it won’t see them. The Cloud Keys (even the Gen 2 cloud keys) have a micro-SD card slot for this very purpose.

You’d need to take that up with the person who made you buy it, even though LOADS of people almost certainly said it was flakier than pastry and you shouldn’t touch it with a barge pole.

Ubiquiti have such massive potential. The all in one system is fantastic, but flaky firmware releases and shoddy software control for firewalls really let them down.

Imagine being able to control their firewalls with advanced features offered by the likes of pfSense etc. The hardware can do (some of) it.

I don’t have to imagine it. I use Untangle.

As do I but Untangle can't control UniFi switches and APs. It's a pain to have to do things twice. And who knows what will happen to Untangle in the home user space now that they've been taken over.

How often do you adjust the settings on a UniFi switch or access point? You do it in the controller anyway so what integration are you missing?

When I add/change VLANs, which I probably do way more than the average user. I do miss the single UI for that.

Do you know about Micro Edge? The new name for SD-WAN. They are looking at extending control to Arista switches and access points in which case you’d have to say that UniFi could be toast in the SME arena.

We’re currently looking at the C-260 and C-360 access points because 1. They’re available and 2. The C-360 is WiFi6E and there isn’t a UniFi WiFi6E access point even in Beta yet.

Think I got bought in to the hype and branding. Generally they have been easy to set up and worked well but I have recently considered selling the udmp and making my own router. However all I really want is a solution that doesn't mean I spend a day troubleshooting as I know just enough to get myself into a mess but not to solve issues quickly.

I've been meaning to set up vlans for a while but can't motivate myself to go through the pain.

I also have a unifi 24 port switch and 2 access points.

I do know about it, but I don't really want to end up in the SaaS model for home, hence avoiding Meraki (which aren't exactly cheap, either). I know Untangle Pro is not free, but I managed to get that through work as a one of payment.

Just got myself a Wifi 6 LR today to replace an AC-Lite. So far so good, signal seems to be better by around 10-15% and throughput higher all round. Got it plugged into one of my trusty Netgear GS110TP v2's which are 802.3af only not 802.3at (given the LR states 802.3at only at 16.5W max) - works fine and draws between 7-9W according to the Netgear POE port power monitoring.

We’re looking at lots of options to UniFi but it is quite difficult to replace for the (lack of) money. PowerCloud with Mikrotik could be really good, but it’s still very raw.
