It was a light hearted comment by Grim5 - there is actually a more recent image of T-34s being shipped for the Victory Day stuff as well.

Funny people derided me not that long ago for saying we should look to maintain food security in this country... sure we aren't at a critical position in this country but it sure wouldn't go amiss as things stand if we had better ability to ramp up domestic capabilities.

Depending how things go in a year or two we could be looking at a far more severe situation.

That's not so much related to ukraine as it is the cost of fuel and fertiliser though isn't it?

E: not doubting that this has been a compounding factor among many others that is.

Times are getting tougher in Russia and its becoming an economy of second hand goods like the soviet union

* Unable to get plane parts, the number of commercial planes able to fly dwindles by the day as they are unable to be serviced

* Ericsson, Nokia and Huawai refuse to do business with Russia meaning they are having to canabalize phone towers when some need repairs and are trying to buy old towers from elsewhere

* After taking over the Renault factory, Russia is modifying the plant to start producing the Moskvich

This is the Moskvich... get prepared for a new generation of clunkers clogging Russian roads. You may be wondering why not build renaults, they have the machinery - yes but they have no parts, its not possible to get the parts to build a renault so they have to revive old soviet vehicles.

* Food on shelves and store shelves continue to look bare and people wonder if they will soon line up for food

* Russias military production is all but shutdown - everything they make from planes to missles and tanks reply on foreign computer chips they cannot substitute. For Russian military production to start back up they must be go back to producing 50 year old cold war designs.

* USA has blocked its debt payments

* "Production won’t stop for shoes, clothing, sausages, those kinds of things, but will go back to what Russia was like in the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, where the quality is bad and the price is high. I remember how, if you wanted a kitchen, you would have to go to the shop and get a number and stay in a queue. But not for hours or days you wait half a year for a kitchen. I’m afraid those days are back."

...
When Russians have to trade in their Mercs and BMWs for Moskvitch's you know there's going be a revolution... There's going to be a roaring trade in spare parts for foreign cars over there with spiraling prices.

Gonna be a pivot point I think - to restart and reboot their military industrial and production to sustain a war in Ukraine, let alone sustain a war in Ukraine without depleting their domestic defence needs, is going to require a mobilisation on a massive scale, complete overhaul and scaling up of mining, etc., material processing, new tooling and factories, overhauling old designs, etc. etc.

I assumed food supply would become an issue the day the invasion was launched. Russia and Ukraine produce so much, it was always going to be a problem.

If the war continues it will become worse and worse. Richer countries at least can afford to buy food. It could become a huge problem for poorer countries and spark social unrest and conflict.

I might go and buy a load more pasta and rice next week- I last did that the day the invasion was launched...
