EU sets date for common phone charge cable

Great until we want progression, with no competition anymore, who will fight for faster speeds, better power transfer etc?

About time!
Hopefully this time it is backed by the power of a directive and certain fruity companies get fined or banned if they don't comply. (The last time it was a "gentleman's agreement" and Apple were found to be no gentleman.)

Apple will claim theirs is better, but if Apple wanted theirs to prevail they should have licenced it at minimal cost before USB-C

How does Port design doesn't limit that.

We are already at silly speeds and power anyhow.

240W and 40GBps.

but ... any tom dick and harry's 3rd party charger from china might cause problems on the phone -
sorry sir you used a 3rd party charger usual warranty conditions do not apply.;
phone manufacturers may have to put more resilient(bulky/heavier) electronics in the phone to tolerate poorly certified 3rd party chargers.

maybe you can just have two charge ports ... with more screen real estate the edge of the phone is longer.

( no proprietary ev car charger connectors though - tesla let the riff-raff in now )

What's the difference now... Same thing on USB A chargers. Do you have a point?

And we've been fine this far with USB C on millions upon millions of Android phones and laptops.

good quality components in the charger, providing a linear supply, provide better efficiency/reliability at the iphone charging end
(... never got round to buying a linear usb supply for my chromecast audio)

How niche are we going here and what's that got to do with USB-C.

If you want a higher end charger you're still free to get one.

Reading it up more while USB-PD is the default fast charging standard, apparently manufacturers will still be allowed to implement their own fast charging tech, as long as it still is compatible with USB-PD. Which is pretty much the same with Google's guidelines since 2019 for Android phones with Google services to support it anyway.

I can't see any minimum charging speeds stated in the EU press release but the current minimum I've seen in Android phones is 15W 5V/3A, with 18W being more common on higher end phones with alternative fast charging.

Yep as long as everything has a fallback on PD3.0 9V/ 2A aka 18W it'll be great.

18W is a decent rate of charge on a phone.

People use all sorts of cheap and nasty chargers and cables already, like kona I'm not sure what you're really getting at here. All the iPhone users in my office use Poundland cables (usually bought in multiples because they don't last long) plugged into the power supplies designed for our very cheap LED desk lamps. They don't care about linear supply or efficiency, they just want the charging icon to appear.

I can't remember the last time I charged my phone via a cable directly :p
Maybe plugged it in 3 or 4 years ago?

here's an old article to read about different/fake chargers ... maybe someone knows of a more recent one ..
it's more the charger than the cable ... but as you know despite high voltage on pd charging, some cables have high resistance.

eg.
The output from this counterfeit charger is a wall of noise. In order to fit the waveform in the display, I had to double the scale on the left and increase it by a factor of 5 on the right, so the yellow curve is actually much worse than it appears. On the left, note the huge ripple with massive high-frequency noise on top. This output is not something you want to feed into your phone.

What has sub par chargers got to do with this thread which proposes USB-C connection for all devices.
