Russia is claiming:

* It's killed all Ukranian partisans/spies/saboteurs in shoot outs today in Kherson and there is nothing to worry about.
* It's killed over 1200 Ukranian soldiers around Kherson region and pushed back all Ukranian offences
* It intercepted 53 HIMARS rockets, 4 Hurricane missiles and 3 Tochka-U missiles

Don’t forget about the hundreds of HIMARS launchers they claim to have destroyed with their pin point accuracy.

Do the Russians believe this nonsense?

Sounds like the Ukrainian counter batteries have been doing some good work in the Donetsk region.

I’m still waiting for Russias elite equipment/personnel that so many here and elsewhere claimed were being held in reserve. Muppets.

Russia and China (and maybe India) have joint wargame drills coming up. Mebbe Russia has held back some of its better gear for that.

Now for a story being reported by the Washington Post - that Ukraine has been using wooden decoys of US long-range rocket systems.

Why? To deceive Russia into wasting expensive missiles on fake targets, the paper says.

It can be very hard to distinguish between the fakes and the real US-made High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (Himars) when viewed through a Russian drone camera from a distance, Ukrainian officials have told the US newspaper.

The importance of the advanced missile systems to the battle in the south and east means Russian forces view them as vital targets to strike.

It's led to Russian drone operators giving the locations of the decoys to cruise missile ships in the Black Sea, the Post says.

The wooden replicas have drawn at least 10 long-range Kalibr missiles after just a few weeks in operation and their success means production has been expanded, Ukrainian officials tell the paper.

The Washington Post adds the replica's destruction could partially explain Russia’s "unusually boastful" claims to have destroyed many Western artillery systems.

"They’ve claimed to have hit more Himars than we have even sent," one US diplomat notes.

It somewhat explains why Russia has been claiming to have destroyed a number HIMARS systems.
 
I'd be surprised if they succeeded in a quick retaking of the city since that would invariably require Russian units along with various other groups thinking being a POW is less risky than trying to hold or fleeing across the river which presumably they've been threatened with consequences for doing by their own commanders.

Pretty sure the idea is to get into a position to surround the city and get in range of the river with artillery/saboteurs so they can fully block them from resupply so they can siege the city the old-fashioned way to best preserve the city as well as opening up avenues for citizens to escape assuming there are any left that haven't been filtrated out for a Russian genocider.

Suspect there is a high chance this is exactly what they are doing.
Counter battery does a quick rough job of location, quick wizz over with a drone and try to hit it from afar
Result, another pile of burning wood and one less cruise missile

Well they need to look after them (HIMARS) it's not like US will send a thousand of this system.

Shoot and scoot is one of the main tactics of this type of highly mobile system.
With delayed or long attack times after launch they are very difficult to counter battery as they can shoot and be gone so quickly.
Eventually some will be lost, its inevitable, luck may have an enemy aircraft nearby, or a behind enemy lines squad who happens to be nearby etc

A first batch of Iranian-made combat drones has been received by Russia from Tehran but many of them are faulty, the US military has said.

"It's likely part of Russia's plans to import hundreds of Iranian UAVs [unmanned aerial vehicles] of various types," Pentagon spokesman Brig-Gen Patrick Ryder was quoted as saying by AFP.

However, Ryder says the available intelligence suggests the equipment has "already experienced numerous failures". He offered no evidence for this. AFP said.

In the war both Ukraine and Russia are using large numbers of drones both for attack and surveillance.
