Producing newer vehicles does allow them to be supplied to units elsewhere freeing up hardware to use in Ukraine but overall doesn't seem the most useful approach for the kind of scales and times required when it comes to Ukraine.

Thinking about it, they may not be for Ukraine at all. After Russia's heavy losses since February, they need to rebuild their forces regardless of whether they intend to throw them into the thresher of Ukraine.

Maybe Russia can buy some more T62s from North Korea to go with the ammunition they're buying :p.

Looks like the coup is on if the breaking news out of Moscow is right. Its begun.... More and more political calls for Putin to resign all over Moscow.
Link? Or is this just re the general rumblings about some figures starting to criticise him and the district councils calling for him to be removed? Definitely interesting that they feel able to say things like that now...

Not seen any new news on this, there were some officials in St Petersburg calling for him to go a couple of days ago but that's a long way away from an actual coup.

Hmm is it the usual Kremlin scattershot of information or is something spooking them?

I mean tbf if the 3rd Corps that had failed to reinforce Izyum (probably a commander making rash politically expedient decision with inaccurate information about the available equipment/combat-readiness of said force) were flattened then their newly formed units aren't really of any use.

At this point, you have to wonder if LNPR and DPR are starting to brick themselves with the idea that Russia might actually pull out of Crimea.

Didn't the DPR leader officially resign, or try to?

Saw a "take it with a pinch of salt" document to that effect, as always a lot of info flying around. Wasn't all that surprising though if true.

Even if Putin was replaced would it just be another former FSB dictator or would it be an actual government with free and fair elections?
Good question isn't it... Often coups just seem to replace one terrible dictator with another, slightly less competent dictator. Leaders like Putin tend not to allow people with a strong belief in liberal values to rise into positions of power... You never know, could start things moving in the right direction though, especially if diplomacy with other countries made it clear that it would be better for them to move in that direction.

Would be a bit of a question over whether the West or China could wield more influence though I suppose... CCP Russia branch anyone? :p

I mean to be fair the Donetsk front literally outside of the city has been fairly static for 8 years even with much larger Russian assistance so I imagine that is perceived rather badly in the Kremlin, surely it'd be logical for any leader of a failed operation would be getting a very special evening in an FSB prison cell... probably best for him to run before he's pushed.

That is true - though the announcement tried to tie it to mobilisation.

Pretty much zero chance of free and fair, I'd think. Relatively likely to be a better leader for the world than Putin has been, but I can't see them fixing Russia. Russia will collapse before it can be repaired.

I assume the logical person to take over would be the prime minister short term, ie the guy (whos name I forget) who swapped roles with Putey before so he could run for longer

He could then run the "fair" election*

*which I assume in Russia post Putin would mean who is willing to grease most palms / assassinate the opposition
