Perhaps a better counter example would be the many civil wars in history. The bloodiest wars are usually fought between the people who are most closely related.

you might be surprised to learn that "white" russians are only found in a small part of russia and that most of the land is occupied by various ethnic groups that either look arab or chinese/mongol

russia is run like an empire, so on TV all you see is the white Russians, they are wealthy compared to the ethnic groups, but the russian empire forces these ethnic groups to do all the dirty jobs, like going to war so the white ones don't have to

I'm not sure that the Eastern front in WW2 really disproves anything... The Germans had a developed system of racial categorisation, and it's safe to say they did not think the slavs were the same as the Germans, even if to the casual modern observer they all look 'white'.

I'm not sure it proves anything either, mind - the point about it being easier to have sympathy with people who you see as being to yourself is more of a general idea than a rule that applies in every case...

Belarus could be interesting, nothing concrete other than a wayward thought, but I understand Lukashenka is not well liked.

With Putin otherwise busy, it has the potential for triggering Lukashenka being kicked out should the populace decide they don't want him in power.

Only reason I can really see for Belarus not officially joining the conflict is that the army is not fully controlled, and they'd rebel rather than officially go to war with Ukraine.

They'll always be interested in stuff they don't know about their enemy's army. If anything, how their armour is outfitted and the best way of destroying it.
