BMW and M Power Owners

The 30D really is a gem, as is the incredible 8-speed auto. It's also (like almost every car on the road) significantly more economical that the T5 was (42 vs 28) which was also a key consideration for selling the Volvo, now I no longer have a company fuel card!
nice - when the roof box is on how much does that hit A/motorway mpg. , runflat/what tyres.

I haven't done enough motorway mileage yet under similar conditions to come to a definite conclusion on how much the roof box affects MPG. My feeling is that it's something like 2-4 mpg but there are too many other variables such as number of occupants, luggage and traffic conditions for me to be certain about this.

It has run flat tires, I have no idea which ones (they are black and round) but when it comes time for new tires, I will be giving some thought as to whether to switch back to regular tires as there is a little bit more road noise than I think this car should have although it's like a Rolls-Royce compared to the Volvo.

In my F11 530d, when the car is fully loaded and has the roofbox also fully loaded I'd say I lose a good 4-5 MPG - when I had the trailer on as well recently for the holiday that was costing my around 8 MPG in total (assuming computer is fairly accurate) but even then it's hard to judge given some is downhill/uphill etc.

As for the runflats - took mine off my F11 2 weekends ago - everyone said what a difference it makes and boy they are right! Best thing I've ever done! The car is far quieter and comfortable, handles better and isn't likely to crack anymore alloy wheels anytime soon due to pot hole damage!

Regarding RF tyres, I thought it was interesting that the first MOT on my G31 failed at 37K due to

  • Nearside Front Inner Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (5.2.3 (d) (i))
  • Offside Front Outer Tyre has a cut in excess of the requirements deep enough to reach the ply or cords (5.2.3 (d) (i))
"cut" not "worn" so I don't know what that is all about unless it was a burst blister/bulge. I'll keep an eye on them and look into some regular tyres at some point (maybe Michelin PS4/S's).

Yo,
Looking at various 2015 - 2016 435D Grand Coupe's....

Anything to worry about or look out for? approx 60-75k miles.

Not had a "newer" BMW... only one we have in the family is a E39 M5.

A couple of months ago, I finally sold on my 03 Volvo V70 T5 after 16 years of ownership and with 176K on the clock. It was a great car but it was time to move on.
Given the state of used prices, I got a good price for it and then paid top dollar (don't ask) for this 2018 G31 530D with 50K from a BMW dealer.

I've wanted a touring for absolutely years, always loved the shape of them (and I always drive estates).
The cabin is a really lovely place to be and the car is a joy to drive and I'm over the moon with my first ever Beemer.
As well as being my first BM, it is (after driving for 36 years) my first ever diesel. I always swore I'd never have one and I don't really do the miles to warrant a diesel but I believe the 30D is the right engine for this car (and for my needs).

(I do sometimes miss the sound of the T5 engine though but I'll get over it).

On top of the M Sport pack, I think (but not 100%) the only optional extra are the comfort seats (and why I bought this precise car). Oh and the MS badge delete which I'm happy with. It doesn't even have electric folding mirrors.

So there you have it. Not a fire-breathing M car, just a lovely car for a guy racing towards 60 who's always wanted a Touring.

Nice :)
Looks like it has the M-Sport Plus pack optioned - upgraded 20" wheels, Sun protection rear glass and HK Audio.

The 435d is only available with xDrive. On the 3 Series, this also means you don't get M Sport suspension which impacts on the handling. I can't remember if this was also the case on the 4 Series, but I think it was.

This, combined with the fact they are often a bit cheaper, means that you might also want to look at a 430d as well. This would then allow your budget to get a lower mileage car, meaning you could potentially go for a BMW Warranty which is reasonably priced on a lower mileage 4 Series.

I'll have a look at the 430's. Although, the idea of 300+ BHP was what lured me to the 435 ;)

Drive both and see how they compare. The 430d is 260bhp so it's hardly slow. I've never found the difference to be anything like what people seem to think it is.

The suspension issue is worth looking into as the M Sport v non M Sport suspension makes a significant difference to how the car drives.

Be careful though, powerful diesels are often bought by people who really want a proper performance car but are attracted by lower running costs. These people get bored very quickly.

A 435d is not a diesel powered M4.

Having owned a 320d XDrive:

XDrive doesn’t come without downsides. It can be funny with tyres, and it impacts the handling/ride.

I would much rather go for a kitted out 430d than a basic 435d.

Keep an eye out on brakes - my BMW had the upgraded M Sport brakes and they were fantastic. I test drove a 340i without them (I.e. normal brakes) and they were comparatively poor - almost like jumping back into a fiesta. They’d be the only must have, along with pro nav, for me.

HK is worth it with the correct settings.
Can’t remember when the LCI version of the 4 series came out, but I would want one vs pre LCI, for the better tail lights and newer nav.

But yeah, really wouldn’t worry about a 35d

I'll be coming from a 300+ bhp mazda 3 mps.
Had it over 5 years, so I'm looking for my next 5 year car. I don't think I'll bet bored easy.
I'll see if there are any 430d around me to have a test. I might find it more then enough.

I take it the xdrive doesn't have m sport suspension?

I have a 420iX GC and can confirm it sits noticeably higher. If you're used to a 300bhp definitely go for something similar power wise. I've been driving a m135 hire car and it's so much faster, think my car is going to feel very slow when I get it back :(

To be fair the 420i isn't particularly powerful, a 430d has almost 80bhp more.
