You aren't certain to die in a nuclear war, the radiation in the initial blast area drops quite quickly. Between us we have detonated nearly 2500 nuclear devices and we are still here.More like 4 minutes for us here in the UK.
You're far better off running towards a major industrial / population center and being vaporized in the initial blast, than left to slowly melt from the inside due to radiation poisoning![]()
Both Nagasaki and Hiroshima remain as large and populus cities and the weapons used on them were dirty and inefficent - modern weapons will cause much more blast damage, but lower long term contamination.
Ruined countries have pulled themselves together in the past and probably will do in the future.
Hopefully no one will be silly enough to test this out.
