Maybe not on the forum, but I'll bet people are taking it seriously in the real world.

Imo no one in the real world is taking much notice of it either, a bunch of countries inc US and France have come out and said the referenda are a joke and won't be taken seriously. EU has threatened even greater sanctions if they carry them out, for whatever that is worth anyway.

No one is going to recognise these referendums apart from China, Syria, Iran and a few of the stans....

As @martynr says, China didn't even recognise the annexation of Crimea, they're not going to recognise the annexation of Donbass and Luhansk either. China aren't allies of Russia, they just join them in opposing the West and trying to rewrite the international order to make the US less powerful.

I honestly think they can't affect the war in any way. It's basically out of their and most of Europe's hands. As long as they just keep supplying them with weapons really
Truss has committed 2.3 billion pounds this year to the Ukraine defence, weapons and training.

That may be so, but when you look at the actual supply of hardware and munitions, the vast majority of it is still coming from the US.

We are a small country, with a small military. We are having the same effect on the Ukraine conflict as our "Green Levies" are on Global Warming Climate Change.

That may be so but we are second or third in our commitment to Ukraine, a fact recognised by the Ukrainians themselves.

"Commitment" really doesn't mean much if you cannot supply the quantity of hardware and munitions required, which we cannot even come close to.

Just look at the amount of stuff the US has shipped compared to the UK, we're a drop in a very big bucket and commitment doesn't repel invaders.

Doesn't really seem like that much on the scale of government finances. Especially considering that she's happily forking over £150bn of our money to energy companies and not even trying to add further temporary taxes on their extreme profits.

If we can spend that much to help deal with the impacts of the war then maybe we should be prepared to spend a bit more to treat the source of the problem...

Send them up to half of all our army's equipment including tanks for all I care.... 5 years time we can have it all replaced with spanking new stuff. Russia is one of the key threats that our military is intended to deal with. We might as well put the equipment to use... The more Russian kit gets blown up in Ukraine the better as it will no longer be a potential threat to Europe.

Commitment means we trained the Ukrainian army before the invasion, means that we buy kit specifically to hand over to Ukraine, means that we are continuously training Ukrainian units.
We don't have an economy the size of the US but don't dismiss the efforts that we are providing to help achieve the defeat of Putin.

I am not dismissing them at all, But the level to which we are actually helping Ukraine kick the Russians out is extremely overblown.

Training helps, but if you don't have the hardware and munitions to back it up, it's all but useless.

What they need, what they want, it's lots of MLRS / HIMARS and lots of rockets to shove into them.

Does he? I understand the intention was to replace the leadership of Ukraine and install a regime friendly to Russia rather than annex the whole country. Having failed in that aim, the new aim is to annex Donbass/Luhansk and create a land corridor supplying Crimea.

Yeah, I still think that nukes are a bluff rather than a real threat. Putin is a barking dog, hoping to deter the West with threats.
Its one and the same, he wanted all Ukraine under his control, thats not even debatable, the Dombas is the booby prize, better than nothing.

Which we do not have, but it is noticeable recently the effectiveness and scale of the Ukrainian army on the ground. Some of which is down to the professionalism of their training. We can still provide the anti tank weapons so effective up to now and if the tank war increases over the winter. We are assisting significantly. You still need troops to hold ground.

Interesting interview on R4 just now. Russian contributor turns everything on its head. Russia is defending Ukraine from the UK and the US, Truss and Biden are the aggressors. Etc., etc.
That's what they always do, accuse their opponents of the bad things they do, turn reality on its head. Why did they massacre and torture so many civilians and bury them in mass graves if they are merely defending them?

They were desperately trying to defend them from that pesky western oxygen that's so full of freedom and democracy.
