Energy Prices (Strictly NO referrals!)

The smart plugs, will have a few components inside, a 240 to dc converter to run the wireless chip the relay and perhaps a led. This will be where any efficiency loss happens any ac/dc converter is lossy, however it will consume a watt or less. When you activate the smart plugs you can hear the relay physically click as it switches your device on or off just as you would manually, relays have no effective efficiency loss. Wifi uses the most energy however is the most reliable and has the longest range.

Roughly depending on the smart plug type the below can be used to roughly estimate the running costs. All small amounts add up over time. with 8760hrs in a year a wifi smart plug may consume 8-16kw, if you have lots that can add up. However if used wisely to turn devices on/off at a schedule the likely outcome is that you may save far more electricity than having the device that is plugged in running (even if on standby)

Wi-Fi1.0-2.0 Watts
ZigBee0.3-0.6 Watts
Z-Wave0.3-0.5 Watts

Of course it could just be that hes confused and wherever he got this from has said they can be inaccurate so dont take what the plugs say as verbatim.
IIRC my energy monitor lists +/- 2% as accuracy.

If that were true then plugging a 2kw heater into one would result in a draw of 2.5kw - 500w of which would need to be dissipated as heat by the smart plug. Not sure if you've ever touched a 100w light bulb after it's been on after a while, but imagine 5x that heat in a small plastic plug ;)

Alledgedly some dodgy chinese knock off phone charges will give you a demo of this ;)

Quick question really aimed @Zenduri . Any idea when eonNext will launch their NextDrive tariff? I'm on Online v9 tariff, fixed at 27.7p/kWh until Feb. I've had batteries installed this year, so am thinking I'd really benefit from some cheap overnight electricity to charge them this winter when they won't get charged by solar. I dont actually have a EV car so not sure about switching to Bulb/Octopus and losing my current good tariff as I cant prove I have an EV in order to get onto their cheaper overnight tariffs, so was hoping to stay with Eon and guarantee I'm switching straight onto a nice cheap overnight Drive/E7 tariff.

As far as im aware we stopped doing the EV tarrif Dec last year due to the issues with the energy market. It will be returning at some point but i have no idea when

Eon-next has just emailed from October I will be paying £349!!!! Minus the £67 from the government that is 282. I was paying 120 this time last year and 250 since the cap in Jan.

How are normal people going to cope with an extra 2 grand a year on energy? My mother is a pensioner but luckily she doesn't live here anymore and her cost of living is okay but if she did she would have been buggered.

This country is proper up the wall.

It's ok, our chancellor decided now is the perfect time to "clamp down on" (Translation :- Persecute) Those who are on Universal Credit, while at the same time talking about removing the cap on banker's bonuses..

You really couldn't make this kind of crap up.

To summarise. This time last year I was paying ~£1440 which was always in credit so often got refunded money. This has gone up to an annual of £3218 with the March cap. This is now at £4193. £2800 increase in a year . What is going to happen in the next year I wonder?

That £400 from Truss is next to nothing.

Use less, my usage for electric is 20-30% year on year from just year..
Gas will be even greater as I have programmed the timer to be 50% less so expect 30-40% less usage there

Your figures mean nothing without unit usage, house size etc.

Nothing prices frozen for 24 months. In fact if prices drop you will carry on paying the new frozen amount.

Easier said than done. We have already cancelled unnecessary subscriptions saving about a grand a year. Problem is the house is occupied 24/7 by at least one adult so trying to turn on the heating later or earlier isn't that easy. I am awake 3am for my job and my missus doesn't get back till 7:30pm. I will suck it up it just annoys me I am losing essentially a top end spec PC every year :P

Only thing is we are a household that loves a good soak in the bath so I could always make everyone move to showers!

Well I'm on Economy 10 with SSE - ~7100kwh annual usage (all electric flat only - 2 adults) and have just got the new rates and will now end up paying £2500 a year from 1st October - a £350 increase from current prices.

Why do they mean nothing? Our usage is pretty consistent year on year. House is a large 3 bed detached with loft, cavity insulation, double glazing etc. Pretty average.

It's a bit like me saying my food bill each month is really high but I eat 5 takeaways a week, and don't mention that.

Without context, actual usage figures, your "Spend £X" has no real meaning.

Let me give you some context for my own figures:

House: 3 Bed Detached
Occupants: 1 Power Hungry WFH adult
Boiler: Combi for CH/HW
Electric: 5500kwh per year
Gas: 6000kwh per year

Electric SC is £0.46/day, Gas SC is £0.28/day.
Cap unit rates of approx. £0.34/kwh on Electric and £0.103 on Gas.

So without £400 assistance, my bills would be:

Electric SC: 365 * £0.46 = £167.90
Electric Units: 5500 * £0.34 = £1870.00
Electric Total: £2037.90

Gas SC: 365 * £0.28 = £102.20
Gas Units: 6000 * 0.103 = £618.00
Gas Total: £720.20

Avg Elec per Month: £169.82
Avg Gas per Month: £60.02
Avg per Month: £229.84
Grand Sum: £2758.10

Your house may be pretty average but your energy use isn't.

That £3,218 you're currently paying would be increasing to around £5,800 from 1 October without the government price guarantee.

Your figures are pretty similar to mine, 4 bed detached but no cavity insulation. My new price is £4100, my pond is drawing a constant 200w which makes up about £620 now and my boiler is pretty old and the thermal store uses a fair bit of gas.

Think I was using about 6300kwh electric and 15000kwh gas a year.
