*** Official Ubiquiti Discussion Thread ***

What I was meaning is the performance of the hardware is the same e.g. if you had an EA model, it will pretty much be the same experience.
Maybe. From Rev 1 to Rev 6 of the US-16-XG only one of the 4 10BaseT ports worked at any time. They fixed that in Rev 9 and no, I don’t know what happened to Revs 7 and 8. The original EA UDMs were dog slow and they fixed that at some point in EA. Up to Rev 3 of the GA USW-Flex they wouldn’t pass through power properly unless they were powered from the most extreme PoE++ ports and all of a sudden in Rev 4 they worked as advertised from just PoE+. So I don’t think you can necessarily state with any certainty that there will be no change in performance.

I’ll grant you it’s unlikely, but not certain.

I'm looking at getting a couple of the UniFi 6 long range APs but at the moment I've only got cat6 cabling up to my loft...do you think over a 2 floor house with one at each end of the loft they would get 5ghz to the ground floor?

I have a single AC-Lite next to the loft hatch in my 3-bed new build, and this provides coverage both within the house and in very close proximity outside. The house is approx 120sqm.

Thanks guys, I might grab one for now and put it in the middle of the house (long rectangle shape) and see how it goes. Unless someone tells me I'm making a big mistake I think I'll just use a £40 TL-SG1005P Poe switch to power it?

Do you need a switch? Otherwise just use a PoE injector...

Yeah only got one cable up there, and am planning on putting a couple of IP cameras in the soffits when money allows!

Would be nice if I could find a switch that can be powered by Poe and also then supply Poe...but I am failing miserably.

Ubiquiti make one, (switch flex), out of stock at the moment. It’s powered by Poe++ so you may need an injector for it unless your existing Poe switch and do Poe++

I didn't see these, the ones on the US site said $29..no wonder they are out of stock! Hopefully they will come back In to stock and I'd go: router - injector (need to find one, any suggestions?) - switch flex - couple of UniFi 6 long range APs and IP cameras coming off the switch.

The $29 switch is the Flex Mini. The Flex is a different thing. The Flex Mini isn't a full featured switch but they're generally OK.

Keep an eye on the PoE budget. If you're powering a Switch Flex by PoE++ then you have 46w available for PoE devices. The AP's will be fine, they generally use 5w or less but PoE cameras are likely to use more.

Don’t be confused by the flex and the flex mini or what ever they are called.

One is a poe powered switch
The other is a poe powered switch that also gives out PoE.

The latter is about €115. Ubiquiti also make a compatible injector.

Edit: too slow :D

Damn. I saw what I wanted to see and got too excited to realise I am an idiot, although I was thinking it was too good to be true :D

In which case I may have to wait a bit longer to fund it, or maybe just go for the £40 TL-SG1005P for now and find a more traditional way to power it. Thanks chaps.

Unfortunately not, but I think I've got a cunning plan to run some power in to a bedroom cupboard (built in, so can bring the cat6 in to it from the ceiling all nicely hidden away) which means I can hopefully stick the POE switch in there...with one benefit being I don't have to go near the loft if it breaks and the other one being summer doesn't cook it! Long term I'm sure my wife won't mind a small comms cab in there

I've tried out OPNsense, Untangle and a few others. No matter how much I tried to 'like' them, I always missed the single pane of glass which Ubiquiti offers and I'm delving into CCVT, so I got myself a UDM SE.

Bit more work to do with the install itself. In terms of the SE, I like it. I've got it running at line rate (900/100) with smart queues enabled on the upload only.

Will get BGP and native Wireguard working on it at some point.

Much better.

Is that a custom server rack?
