Once faced with almost certain death, I would hope to make good use of my last days. I would note the people who threatened to kill me for surrending and were also actually close enough to do it, wait until I had a loaded weapon....and chose to die whilst killing one or more of the executioners.

I can see a lot of people going trans all of a sudden.
Quite a few in the forces now as well, both M-F and F-M. I know a few of them myself. Hasnt stopped them from serving.
As already alluded to, a lot of the barriers to serving have been demolished in the last decade or two.
There would no doubt be further relaxations for entry standards were there to be full scale mandatory service. If you increase the size of a standing army you also increase the size of the logistics and support burden, people who may not be suited to frontline roles due to limitations etc would end up fullfilling support roles.
If the worst were to happen and mandatory service actually became a thing. Just because you get called up dosnt mean you would end up being line infantry charging over the trenches to impending doom.

It doesn't need much ability to surrender, in fact, it's generally a better means of surviving. I think perhaps you're overestimating your own ability old man, you're not in your glory days anymore! ;)

Fair point but you cant outrun a bullet, I may even have one with your name on it, so every cloud has a silver lining and all that.

Not you.Every yellow belled chicken that won't serv for the UK.

That's not going to help, the alphabet soup people's thrust for more than just legal status has shot them in the foot when it comes to avoiding recruitment, we've already had service personnel leave because they were asked to actively seek minorities and others out for preferential consideration:

LGBT+ SOLDIERS AND OFFICERS IN THE ARMY

"As the Army's Principle Personnel Officer my aim is to ensure that every officer and soldier in the Army is treated with respect whatever their protected characteristic or background. As the LGBT+ Champion, I will ensure that the community continue to receive this same respect and that all feel confident bringing their whole selves to work."

- Lieutenant General Chris Tickell CBE, Deputy Chief of the General Staff and Army LGBT+ Champion

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender soldiers

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT+) soldiers serve throughout the Army's corps and regiments playing their part in the country's security.

LGBT+ personnel have the same terms and conditions as everyone else; this includes maternity benefits and pension arrangements for same-sex spouses or civil partners.

The Army welcomes transgender personnel and all who apply to join the Army must meet the same mental and physical entry standard as any other candidate. If you have completed transition you will be treated as an individual of your affirmed gender.

The Army LGBT Forum exists to ensure that all LGBT+ serving personnel can find advice and support with issues that affect their daily lives.

I'm sure the Russians would respect their rights and issues.

At 65 and in a wheel chair, I'd don't think I would pass a test.
But. I could put a gatling gun on each side and go for it :)

Or buy a Barrett M82 or a Snipex Alligator magnum and learn to be a sniper.
How many years did you serve in the army? I'd be uncomfortable telling other people they had to fight if I hadn't done it.
And, in the case of the Ukraine war, I certainly don't want any more Russians getting conscripted.

I've done worse than joining any army.
I got married......twice

You know the stupid thing is that, these old beat up junkers if used correctly could still be very effective. An old tank, even one as obsolete as that is still a very lethal killing machine in the right hands. However, I think its very much a safe bet that its not going to get used properly and will go towards flooding the scrap iron market.

You would be far better served in electronic warfare anyway. Just aim and post your opinions at the enemy and you’d most likely defeat them before they set foot on the battlefield

Just have to hope for Ukraine the nuclear threats are a bluff and a bluff that needs calling, can't let Russia get away with the threats because they'll keep doing it

Yep rigged elections mean nothing in a time of war, absolutely ridiculous sentiment coming out of Russia.

I agree, call their bluff, prepare for the worst. US will get involved if they start lobbing nukes.
