This is the premise of MAD. To be an effective deterrent and maintain some semblence of balance countering an ICBM's MIRV's is almost impossible. If a country develops a system to 100% counter all MIRV's you would spark a new arms race to find a new system to reach the balance of MAD. It never ends.

If people want to pretend that the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons is not approaching a similar level to that of the Cuban missile crisis and ban discussion of it's possible repercussions due to us engaging in a proxy war with Russia, maybe they could start another thread?

The "Ostrich and Spade" thread might be a suitable title ;)
 
Putin will carry on through this winter, murdering citizens in town centres with missile attacks and killing his own troops in trenches in the front lines.

Because its not even like that, and because Missles where put there doesnt mean they were definetly going to be used.
Russia would bet and hope that people are still scared of the CMC etc and use that as part of their head games.
They ain't doing jack, a few generals would put several bullets in his head, throw him out a window and spread some polonium over him before that happened.

Putin is threatening to use nukes in this war, so it's on-topic.

I personally don't think Putin can be taken at his word, but there's still a larger risk now than there was before Putin started getting embarrassed on the battlefield.

Russia still has the ABM complex defending Moscow - and you can bet its been fully tested recently. Nuclear armed ABM missiles.

Absolutely. It’s extremely relevant.

Unless Putin is removed then unless Russia suddenly turn things around in Ukraine it leaves the only option to start with tactical nukes. The yield of these can be very small through to twice that of what was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Scary to think those would be considered only tactical size in todays world. :eek:

I don't think Putin is stupid enough to actually use a nuke. He will know that if he does it means destruction of his military by NATO and alientation even by his allies in China.
He will keep throwing men and material at it until he either backs down or is removed from power.

I tend to agree, I think its pretty unlikely, but its not impossible
Ignoring the risk as some seem to want to do is a dangerous game

What are they supposed to do? Protesters get jailed and people who speak out get killed.

We're on a slippery slope ourselves. Our own politicians are slowly killing our country.
