Not really, if he keeps saying Putin is bluffing this will tempt Putin to not bluff so he's not made to look weak. If he says he knows Putin is not bluffing but keeps on doing what he's doing whilst requesting negotiated peace Putin at least may feel like he's taking him seriously.

We're well and truly at the mercy of the war mind readers at this point.

Agree with this.

It shows Putin, fine we know you're serious. It shows him if he does such a thing then these are the consequences so it would be a bad choice. It makes Putin feel it his choice not to go crazy thus satisfying his narcissistic power trip whilst getting what we want.

It's quite a good approach imo. Far better than minimising or ignoring it as that may provoke a giant temper tantrum.

He just might not care about anything.

Its horrible to say, but Russia losing (which looks likely) is the biggest risk to full on end of the world.

As for Biden, most Russians will not get to see his speeches unless they have access to world news outlets. It is a direct push to the generals, the intelligentsia, the business world. Think again he is saying to them.
 
Plenty of the top folk in Russia will not want a nuclear war, same as the Russian sub captain in the Cuban crisis who kinda refused to do anything but didnt and is actually a hero.

But as is this now a nuclear war Armageddon thread as apparently its more relevant than boots on the ground rather than the war itself..... of course.

Yes, we need to get back to the war not the threats.
 
I think folks are right to be concerned about possible use of low yield tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine but probably wrong about any escalation that lead to.

To me it seems like Putin has accepted that he cannot take Ukraine but in doing so has a set a red line that they must take back the four annexed regions. I can't see Putin accepting anything less that this. Use of small yield tactical nuclear weapons could certainly achieve that, but given how Ukraine's current fast paced counter offensive the best outcome would be to create a no go around around the four annexed regions but at the cost of probably contamination of those 4 annexed regions themselves. If the use of these weapons was strictly limited to Ukraine and any associated fallout minimized to NATO countries I can't see any real escalation other than additional sanctions on Russia.

I'm kind of the opposite. If he does use one. I can't see how it cannot escalate.

Probably 50/50 on whether he uses one.

It's Biden signalling this is a genuine threat, and not bluster.

If Putin authorises a tactical nuclear strike, and the US response would be to attack Russian assets directly, I think we all know where this is going to end.

I'm guessing this is intended to put pressure on Putin's inner circle, who may be persuaded to find an innovative solution to this problem.

If putin really wants to take Ukraine, he wouldn't use a tactical nuke on Ukraine.

Makes him seem even more insane.

It's also the first time, as far as I recall, that the US or NATO have mentioned being prepared to use nuclear weapons. So far they have avoided doing so, while Russia throws the threat about casually. So it's a message that should hopefully be taken seriously at the Russian end.
