Just been looking around and after deciding a month ago I wanted an R53 Cooper S purely because I used to want one, 2 weeks later its hurt my back & my neck, I'm not as young as I used to be, its sold!

Was looking around at something just comfortable, that won't struggle for space & get the job done, tbh I would have gone for a Focus kinda size but the spec/age for the same kinda money (2k-2500) is just scary in comparison to bigger cars.

Looking at a 2009 (59) Mondeo 2.0 TDCI Titanium X, seems to have every toy I'd want & need and more, economy OK & seems nice all ron from the viewing I had last week (Test drive at the weekend).

Its on 110K Miles, water pump & Cambelt done at 102K and while not complete, a very comprehensive service history, however, the down side, aroudn 1 month MOT left, and the following advisories from last year, would this be a walk away & don't be silly..?

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
  • Rear Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrule (1.1.12 (f) (i))
  • Rear Sub-frame corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Rear Subframe mounting prescribed area is corroded but not considered excessive (5.3.6 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Trailing Arm (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Offside Front Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Trailing Arm (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Lower Suspension arm pin or bush worn but not resulting in excessive movement Front Bush (5.3.4 (a) (i))
  • Nearside Front Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Front Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Rear Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Offside Rear Suspension arm corroded but not seriously weakened (5.3.3 (b) (i))
  • Nearside Front Noise From Suspension

The corrosion you would expect for a car of this age, it'll just be on the surface.

My 08 Fiesta the rear axle had a lot of surface rust, but I rubbed it down treated and repainted it, by no means a permanent fix but keeps on top of it. I am going to buy a spare subframe for the front and get that shot blasted and powder coated in the near future.

Of the MOT advisories in that list the suspension noise would concern me the most, as well as the worn bushes, if they split or deteriorate further you'll need to address fixing the suspension or it'll not pass another MOT.

What is the previous MOT history like? That list of advisories could be down an overzealous MOT tester - their attention to detail is questionable though - trailing arms on the front suspension??

It’s a 13 year old car so it’s going to be a bit scabby underneath, but if it’ll pass an MOT surely the seller would have put an MOT on it as it will make it much easier to sell. There are plenty of these around but at this age you’ll probably have to look at a few to find a really tidy one. They are generally solid cars but I’d probably look for a 2.0 petrol if you want cheap trouble free motoring. The diesels are OK but at this age they’re a gamble.

I think I'd want to get emissions checked - reminded me of earlier mondeo thread V .. I thought there was a Scottish guy on here who ran/traded mondeos as part of a taxi firm with intergalactic mileages

reminds us that is a ford diesel problem, mate had to fork out £1k for new jag/mondeo injectors,
so I'd be seeing if they are covered in warranties, plus test driving from cold.

Previous history is not awful - https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/results?registration=Ak59+xuh

Is 110K really intergalactic miles for a 13 year old Mondeo though? As above on the MOT History 13-14k miles a year is hardly obscene and for a taxi doing that they'd be going bust doing that kind of mileage! :D

I have an 09 2.0 TDCI TX on 165k and also have the same corrosion warnings on the subframe but it's purely aesthetic at the moment according the tester. Might give it a brush and Lanoguard it but hoping not to keep it beyond its next MOT in a year's time.

The only problems I've had in 2 years is two front shocks and a split intake pipe, plus a bit of water ingress thanks to a loose thrid brake light.

Make sure the clutch and DMF have been done at least once, that's a potential big bill. Otherwise your main driveline is good for many more years and miles.

If you want music streaming you'll need a Bluetooth module from a more modern Ford, connects above the glovebox inner which you need to remove first but works really well with the stock Sony radio. It only does voice otherwise. They're about £50-80 on eBay.

Also did a double take on the reg, mines similar.

I'm going for a 2nd viewing on Sunday but the guy today said it was undersealed so there's a chance it could have been tended to I guess, i'll have to see!

Reassuring signs though, I don't do huge miles but nice to just have the size & the better economy should the need arise, and from what I can gather the general consensus is they're hardly awful to drive!

Music streaming would be a plus, i've got a lighter socket FM tuner from the old MX5, but if its not expensive it'd certainly be a good call for the future!

Is it a trader ? Get him to mot it first.

Dropping £2100 on such an old car with 1 months mot I would walk away.

I paid £800 last year for the same car never let me down.

ours is tdci tit x sport auto estate 149ish on the clock not had any of those type advisories admit i did go underneath a few years ago and clean up the rear axle and recoat it also as matter changed all rear bushes, bought a nifty bit of kit that allowed me to remove and press in situe just by lowering. car has been great few minor hickups but on the whole we have had it for about 8 plus years and it drives well . do tend to feel all the bumps with the 18 inch rims though. i bought it high mileage and we now have average mileage so a plus , have to say been offered more than the one you looking at for it but no hurry at the moment.

went to the sons in liverpool last week and it average over 50 to the gallon (not hanging about lol)
