4090 concerns

Isues for me with the 4000 series
Power draw - at a time when politicians are busy ruining us all with frankly criminal power prices only a politician could afford to run one - or buy one

Then there is the heat output.
The cooler is huge and thats because the heat output is huge, as the owner of a strix 3090 OC i can tell you i end up sitting gaming im my pants in the summer - they run that hot and that heat has to go out of your case and into your gaming room.

The cost - in this current financial climate as bankers and politicians ruin us all the price of a 4090 simply isnt reasonable or justified and i whilst i could comfrtably buy one i wouldnt because its just too much money for a GPU.

Then there is thefrnakly insulting "4080 12gb" model and for me it is laughable, it isnt even as strong as a 3090, why would Jenson try and make us look idiots by calling what is clearly a 4070 a 4080 12GB = its a blatant money grab just to bump the price up of a 4070 £200 extra = greed again

As a PC enthusiast of over 35 years now i can tell you we already have the processing power we could have only dreamed of a few years ago, a 3090 will acheive the fps needed for any game, no one would see 300fps over 160fps - they are moving in totally the wrong direction now, we should have bene looking and focusing at keeping the performance and with the focus solely on half the power draw

Id like to have seen less performance with say 200w power draw and then for me the 4090 would be an essential purchase, cheaper and cooler to run.

Releasing a GPU pulling 450 - 600w is utter stupidity and its a sure fire way of ensuring that these draconian WEF idiots running the wolrd will soon legislate and ruin the PC enthusiast industry with legislation - let me tell you it is coming soon the way things are going.

Lastly there is a concern for me with the PCI-e plug, its flimsy and its crap. As a former engineer i can tell simply by looking at it that it isnt up to the task of 450-600w and we will see plenty of these card fail on this socket alone - again mark my words.

That said i wish all the best for those who buy one, but things are moving in the wrong direction for all of us

It's been demonstrated quite clearly that the 4090 is much more efficient than the 3090 or anything else before it. Have read many people planning to take advantage of this and run it cooler and quieter rather than maximum performance.

I hear what you say, but firstly, by all accounts the 4090 uses about the same power as the 3090 that you already own.

The rest I agree with! The entire video card market is madness really. Fortunately, NVIDIA have the answer, they are pricing us all out so no one can afford them, so problem solved.

I am really upset at the 4070 pricing. It's just crazy. I always used to buy the mid-range cards every two years or so and for a very long time it cost me £300. The past few generations are just taking the p. And now to be faced with a bill of over £1000, well, that's just insanity. It's finally reached a point where I say nope.

I deeply regret buying my super-duper monitor now and am very seriously considering downgrading that instead of upgrading my GPU.

NVIDIA seriously need competition.

That is exactly what I would do, except I am not going to buy one, lol. It seems as though everyone designed cooling solutions expecting a much higher power consumption. This means the cards are too big and insanely cooled. I don't mind that, though, I prefer cards that run cooler and quieter.

Ah, the classic "I could comfortably buy one" but here's a long list of excuses why I can't buy the best-performing GPU on the market.

Just on your first point alone, the power draw isn't even that much of an issue. The card is not consistently pulling 450-600w unless you've got the power target wacked right up on a 600w board.

Power draw
Most I've seen mine pull is 435w, less than 100w more than my 3090.

Then there is the heat output.
Runs 20'c cooler than my 3090.

Your requirements aren't mine.

Need more performance for good VR.

Releasing a GPU pulling 450 - 600w
Don't overclock it so it pulls 600w then.

Mine is stable as hell. Doesn't droop, doesn't even wobble when I force it with my hands. You should try actually installing and using one before posting.

you can play cyberpunk at 100-120fps 3440x1440 with the card power limited to 60-70% and the card will only hit 56c on the core sensor whilst pulling around 330watts

so not really any worse than current cards, I checked the air coming from my case exhaust fan and it didn't really seem any warmer than usual

The only thing wrong with the cards is how expensive they are, probably should be closer to 1200

They dont pull 450watt to 600watt, nearly everything you posted is wrong

yea you can tell from a braided cable the metal wire inside is flimsy? okay dood......

The kettle on my kettle is flimsy too I can tell it's going to melt and fuse into my kitchen counter, actually thinking about it the lead to my pc seems pretty flimsy as well allowing me to easily route it around my desk, I think I need to replace it with one of those car charging cables that's insulated by about an inch of rubber

Someone seems bitter and jealous that they don't have one

I don't think it is fair to criticise someone for thinking it's too expensive.

Anyone can afford the odd luxury here and there, so if someone really wants a 4090 I am sure they could afford it, but I think it's fair to say that not many people consider one as high on their list of priorities.

no but you can criticise them for the bunch of factually wrong excuses they pulled from their backside to try and justify their position ramblings of a mad man

I'm not criticising him based purely on it being expensive, the majority of his post isn't even factually correct.

I've seen it too often on here where people shoehorn that phrase in to try and give their post more substance. The truth is, around half of the adult population in the UK don't even have a grand in savings, so the percentage of people who can comfortably afford a £1700 component for a computer is minuscule.

I agree with many of these points, and I have stated similar points on other platforms, but some people are so obsessed with getting the latest (and supposed) greatest piece of silicon, it is like trying to argue with a person from a religious cult.

My first GPU back in 2004, cost about £112.00 a second tier NVIDIA GPU that was DX8. The last GPU I bought from MSI an NVIDIA RTX 3070 MSI Suprim cost a whopping £800.00 (double MSRP). To buy an RTX 4090 of the same or similar model is double and more. There is no way inflation, R and D, and wafer costs justify why a GPU should cost that much. You can buy a top tier motherboard, DDR5 6000 RAM and 7000 series CPU, all combined, for half the price, or less. It makes no sense, unless you conclude that NVIDIA is profiteering to please its CEO and shareholders. In fact, he stated as such in a call to them (shareholders) about two months back.

I predict the GPU/PC market will have a minor crash 2022-2023. Because of the imminent recession and the lack of true competition in the PC market.

Eh come again?

What does the temp of the GPU have to do with heat output? Your previous reply already said it uses ~100W more than your 3090.

That is:
Your 3090 has around 335W of heat output.
Your 4090 has around 435W of heat output.

What temperate they exhausted air comes out at is pretty much meaningless.

Well, that's not what you said.

And most people can afford £2300 if they want to. It is a question of priority rather than how they actually fund it. Many people would prefer to put it towards a nicer car, settee, spend it on the kitchen, and so on. Not many people will prioritise gaming to that extent.

I'm not criticising those people who do prioritise gaming, I am just saying that I think your comment was rather silly.

That's a completely different argument though between afford and comfortably afford.

Yeah, most people can click the buy button with finance, a credit card or without thinking it through (impulse buying/FOMO). I mean, I'm in a position where I could buy one outright but I still wouldn't use the term "comfortably afford". Very few people are in a position to drop £2300 like that, as in it would have zero impact on their finances.

The only silly post in this thread is OPs, going on a mad rant that has very little substance to it. The last part regarding the power adapter is pure nonsense

It's because it's become pure greed from everyone involved in the industry, from the companies that make them, to the distributors to the retailers gouging. Even when there is no real shortages, we all saw what happened other day for the 4090 release ... Prices were going up as they were put up and pulled then put up again and pulled and put up again... from prices that were no where near msrp for many of the cards. It's seriously become a scam and the uk tech market has always been a rip-off compared to the rest of the world. I don't know why they think electricals here can be gouged so much then suddenly out of no where they are half the price. Seriously this is what happens when a country is run by crooks and setting the examples.

As far as I can see the 4090 provides very good performance and if your worried about power then you can lock it at 300w and lose 5-10%. Whether or not it's worth £1700 is debatable as 6 years ago a halo card cost £700 and inflation has not over doubled in that time.

The real criticism this time should be directed at the 4080s though as despite costing top end prices neither offer top end performance.

It's been demonstrated quite clearly that the 4090 is much more efficient than the 3090 or anything else before it. Have read many people planning to take advantage of this and run it cooler and quieter rather than maximum performance.

So buy a £2000 GPU but then dont run it at maximum performance. Makes sense. Bit like our Government.
