Hi all,

Im struggling to find a suitable TV unit for a corner position in my living room.

Issue 1 is I have a 55" TV which is 1228mm wide.

Issue 2 is that the corner it needs to go in is also close to a fireplace, so I can't fit in a normal TV corner unit - I need one with extra angles on the front side to miss the fireplace if I want enough width so that the TV is not overhanging the edges.

Issue 3 is the height. A 400mm high unit (which is quite low looking at the market) will have my TV at what seems like a considerable height in the room, over 1.2m.

See my sketchup drawings below, hope you get the idea of the problem.

Any one got any ideas?

Does it need to be a TV unit? A cantilever, telescopic or extra long reach TV wall mount may get the TV exactly where you want it.

Have you tried Wayfair, they have some nice TV stands, that where I got mine from which is 400mm high but not a corner unit. Otherwise since you have the sketchup drawings you could have a go at it yourself ;). Some MDF and a nice glue on veneer and it'll be custom built without the price tag!

Yep that's why I was using sketchup - think I may have to build it, but in which case I'd really appreciate ideas to make it look like I haven't built it myself if you see what I mean.

Here is a photo of the area if it helps. I don't really want to use a wall mounted arm, it would need to be of a considerable capacity to hold this TV in mid air out from the wall, and I think it would look wierd.

My other idea is to assemble together a row of the ikea Eket storage cubes.

Making it yourself depends on your capabilities and what tools you have. As I mentioned before something MDF or plywood with a nice veneer glued on can look good, it's how most furniture is made anyway. An expensive option is to have your design commission built by someone who does it as a living.

From your picture I can see your issue, it's a bit of an awkward space if you want the TV facing you.

You mentioned earlier that you don't want the TV overhanging the sides, I had this problem too with my 50" but just gave in to and don't mind it. My stand in the spoiler below is width 1200, height 400 and depth 450.

I made my own unit to fit my cable box / PS5 / Bluray then hung my TV from a extending / pivoting wall arm. It let me have a small, tidy unit with the TV "floating" above it .

This is what I would do in that position, it’s a good option and you can push the TV back out of the way when not in use or just for casual watching.

The TV won't fold back flat in that alcove, it's too wide.
True, I hadn’t thought of that! Personally I’d have got a smaller TV that fit more conveniently in the space but then I’m happy watching a 15 year old 37” plasma that was bought because it fits lol.

I already had TV when I moved into this house a month ago. Plus 55" is the standard size these days.

The other options in the room are also poor:

1. Within the bay window - would be in front of radiator and an eyesore in front of the windows.

2. Opposite the bay window on a flat wall - but then we've got to site the sofa in the bay window area with our backs to the window.

3. Opposite the fireplace, but then we've got TV and fireplace opposite each other with sofa at 90 degrees to both which looks wierd plus is not good viewing angle.

Have you checked out low tables for a good fit/stable base - got one about 40cm tall maybe a metre long, to put tv on, doesn't look like a bulky piece of furniture as many tv units do,
lower shelf where amp/freeview-bx is placed

One day televisions will be the shape and size of a soundbar with a 3D image projected above it. But we haven't got there yet...

Don't you think that there is an optimal size of screen to fit a room, clue:not the largest. :D

I know you said no bracket but honestly I think that is the best case scenario for you -- I posted a pic in my other thread where you asked where I am putting mine. Here is a close up of the bracket. It will hold your 55" no problems whatsoever. You can then angle it so it sits absolutely snug with either wall.

look at earlier thread too which discusses how you ensure bracket would give movement you need

What do you think about this:

It is 4x Ikea Eket boxes all 350x350 square and 250 deep. The end two are placed facing outwards and the middle two are placed sideways to achieve a total width of 1200mm. Then the boxes are sandwiched between pieces of pine timberboard 1200x500mm, with the middle two boxes recessed back in the frame to create a 150mm deep x 500mm wide recess.

Total height is 386mm so would look to put some 50mm legs on as well to bring height up to 436mm from the ground.
