Ford Fiesta car set to be discontinued as model scrapped

its not popular by a long shot. doesnt even make it into the top 25 in europe these days i'm afraid

I'm surprised - I think nearly half the people I work with own one and reasonably recent models, also popular with friends and family, etc. - though I do see that market branching a lot lately with people either moving from them to cheaper options and/or Kias or the other way to slightly more upmarket alternatives possibly putting that market segment in a difficult position.

UK is Ford's biggest market in Europe by a long shot so, although it may not feature in your example above, the Fiesta is still a very popular car.

France, for example, are loyal to their brands of Peugeot and Citroen so Ford don't do as well there.

Same with Germany (VAG, BMW, Merc)

Which is interesting because the Pug 208, Clio, Yaris, Corsa, Polo etc. all are. And I swear I see more Fiesta's on the road than any of those. Guess not!

See above..

Make no mistake - the Fiesta is a success story for Ford. It was number 1 best selling car in the UK pretty much every month since it was launched decades ago... Quite an achievement really.

People's buying patterns have now switched to SUVs and Crossover vehicles resulting in less demand for standard cars which can help explain its downturn.

A bit sad as had a few fiestas in my time. But on some recent aurotrader browsing I spotted a Vignale 500 miles on the clock. £30k... I mean no one's spending that money on a fiesta surely.

I guess everything's gone up car wise but that seemed like a tough sell. I can see why Ford would make the decision with the rise in SUVs and costs mentioned in the thread. Doesn't mean I like it ! (Not an SUV fan)

My Mk2 Xr2 was a brilliant little car, got to point when the bottom of the A pillar could only be welded up so many times though for a MOT :)

Always loved the RS turbo and XR2i models, my uncle had one when I was a nipper and he'd take me out for a hoon in the passenger seat.

Are you arguing the Fiesta is popular in a thread about Ford killing the Fiesta due to lack of popularity? :D

No doubt it once was the go-to car (hence why I have owned at least.....5). But the Puma is much nicer looking, easier to get into, ticks the box for a lot of folk who would find the Fiesta too small nowadays.

Not at all. Everything dies off eventually.

What I am pointing out is the reasons it wasn't popular in Europe (as mentioned by @233) yet you mentioned you seen loads in the UK compared to 208/Clio etc.

Ford's biggest market in Europe is the UK

Country to brand loyalty in Europe - French popular cars are what are seen as French brands i.e. Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and the same for Germany and what are seen as German brands i.e. VAG, BMW and Mercedes.

Consumer changes - consumers have been switching to SUV and Crossover vehicles since around 2017/2018 making cars less popular overall. Which is reflected in your point about the Puma.

That's not diminishing the fact that the Fiesta has been the best selling UK car for 50 years which is quite an achievement.

Ah gotcha. So the distribution of Fiestas is heavily skewed to the UK. Makes sense.

I'd argue that too! Only have to go out to see it is a very popular car, maybe even the most popular in the road around here. It has an appeal that transcends generations. If I was in the market for a small car, I'm not sure what I'd get now, a Fiesta ST would have been my first choice.

First the Mondeo, then the focus now the fiesta. Ford seem to be determined to rid themselves of their most recognisable and best selling brands. All due to the indecent and unwarranted obsession with SUV's and EV's. I wonder how long, like we have with diesel's, t'll be until it is recognised this is another foolish error..

Yeah he made a good point about distribution is skewed to the UK, so we probably see the vast majority of Fiestas in the UK but Europe-wide it doesn't sell enough as folk prefer their local manufacturers.

Fond memories of the Fiesta.
I had a base 950 with over 120,000 miles on it.
First top end I rebuilt.
Also had a lovely Mk1 XR2 that got stolen from Blackpool

UK specific obesity thing ?
but people will buy what you market to them - remember Nicole ... , and the puma has better margins.

I think it is an age thing. People grew up with Fiestas, the Focus was never particularly interesting. The EcoSport is ugly as sin, the Kuga is "too big" - Puma is a great looking car, those that used to drive Fiestas are a tad wealthier now etc etc.

You gotta keep up with the market or change your product to suit your original market.

Like for like the Puma isn't even that much more expensive on finance

Puma ST Line X 125 Manual - £5k deposit, £286pm
Fiesta ST Line X 125 Manual - £5k deposit, £278pm

They're essentially selling two cars in the same price bracket and they've evidently decided the Puma is going to be the longer term better option

I mean, they made it too expensive.

Also, everything will be an electric SUV/crossover soon anyway.
