Would you leave a space for your title rival if you don't need to? I probably would as I'm too nice but F1 drivers aren't known for being nice once engines are running. I mean Lewis didn't even leave space for his own team mate this weekend, which likely lead to George also losing place to Checo.

Apparently the Ferrari doesn’t do well at altitude so they’ve wound the engine down to stop the turbo spinning up too much.

But you do need to. Rules are rules and most people follow them. Why do you think there were so many rule clarifications after 2021? Because of a certain driver.. remember how we now have the Verstappen rule on SC restarts?

If you watch the Lewis/George video there enough room for George to keep wheels on the track. Compare that to Max tank slapping (as they used to call it before he starting doing it every race) Hamilton and leaving absolutely no tarmac whatsoever and forcing him to take his foot off the gas. Notice how Max immediately gains a huge distance ahead - that’s because Hamilton had to take his foot off the power to avoid contact. No other driver does that as regularly as Max, it’s dirty driving. End of story.

Jolyon Palmer's has an interesting analysis of how a medium->soft strategy would have worked for Mercedes

tl;dw: Wouldn't have made a real difference to Hamilton, he'd have been closer but still 2nd; however George (who wanted that strategy and was refused) could have improved a lot, passing Pérez and possibly Lewis too.

George is learning why Bottas often wasn't happy with Merc strategy. He often wanted something else and Merc were like "nah mate, it's hards for you"

In fact remembering back to the Rosberg days, Merc wouldn't listen to what he wanted either.

Merc have a habit of playing it immensely safe with regard to strategy. Red Bull typically play aggressive and it works most of the time.

I think it's easy to have the best strategy when your car is way faster than everyone else's

Just watched the whole race through, not the most exciting but Max 'toying' of Lewis in the race was mildly amusing. Yes all of those blessed with hindsight will state Mercedes made the wrong tyre choice but even if they'd gone over to the mediums they would still not had any chance of winning against Max's dominance...
