There is also a school of thought UKR actually has the 300km version, which is implied by the below quote.

"Well, the HIMARS—there's two kinds of, in the average person's parlance, rockets you can drop in those: one that goes over 600 miles and one that goes about 160 miles," he said.
"We didn't give them any ones that go to 600 miles, because I'm not looking for them to start bombing Russian territory."

Sadly thats more "Biden Gaffes" as there are no 600 mile version, the maximum range is just 300km for a few versions & it's been Fact Checked as False - https://www.newsweek.com/fact-check...ars-given-ukraine-have-160-mile-range-1758739

Irrespective of any political beliefs, having a leader with clear memory issues like this who continually "misspeaks" with facts like this is a real risk to escalation due to his gaffes.

Yes, Johnson did that, so did Trump..... oh wait you just wanted to attack Biden

Just saw a video of a sniper taking really fast shots at some Russians. Wonder if they have something like the TrackingPoint system over there now?
I don't see any reason why there wouldn't be a few of these systems there. They are commercially available after all and aren't that expensive in the scheme of things (about $10k for a complete weapon system).
The issue will be getting the matched ammunition to go with the scopes. They don't work with any old mil-surp 5.56 ball ammo.

I didn't realise you needed special ammo. I thought it just released the trigger when you passed the cross hair over the target you'd marked.

I read somewhere the other day its to do with the quantities available, that GMLRS are available in the thousands and ATACMS are in the hundreds.

If they were provided I think it would be for very specific one off strikes against especially high value targets.

It looks like they've already delivered the system to Romania and Poland. Estonia and Lithuania have had their orders approved. If the US was to approve of Ukraine receiving them, Poland could hand over some of theirs and the US could replace.

The scope is a ballistic computer and so needs to know the exact spec of the ammo. Bullet weight, powder charge etc. Those figures have to be extremely consistent from round to round.
There's nothing special about the ammo really. It's just a very tightly controlled and QAed set of ammo specifications.

Ah that makes sense. It is a very clever system.

It still doesn't alleviate the problems of how many of these long range missiles are available.

Ultimately I think its a bit of a moot point anyway, having a few of these long range options isnt going to be nearly as useful as the hundreds/thousands they are being provided of the alternate versions where they can absolutely decimate every supply depot / command center / supply route relentlessly for weeks and then move and re-take a defensible amount of ground and allow for logistics and support to move up behind it at a reasonable pace rather than overstretch.

Yeah there isn't many of them.

I don't know how many are in stock because the US isn't going to say, but from what info is available it looks like around 3700 Atacms missiles in total have been built since its introduction, where as nearly 100k of the the M30 GMLRS rockets Ukraine has been receiving have been built since its introduction.

the other info I could find is that the U.S fired 150 atacms missiles in the first gulf war and a further 450 of them in the Iraq war and Im not sure if they fired any in Afghanistan. So out of the 3700 ever built, we know that 600 were already used, we also reasonably know that maybe an hundred or two of them would have been used in tests and we also know several hundred of them were sold to other countries.

If I had to guess, I think the U.S only has between 1 thousand and 2 thousand Atacms missiles left in stock and there is no production of them anymore, production stopped in 2007.

The US is likely very cautious to run down its stocks even more now until the replacement missile has good production numbers. PRSM is in production now but it's still ramping up and it's expected that only 100 of them will be produced by the end of this year - the U.S will start equipping its own military battalions with the new missile in 2023 and then in 2024 both Australia and the UK will start getting some deliveries of PRSM missiles

This whole thing with Lavrov makes me wonder if he is the one who visited a clinic in California, via a Swiss medical service, a couple of months back or so.

As if you didn't think these people were pieces of ****, here is a reminder

A Wagner mecenary who was taken from a Russian prison and sent to the front was capture by Ukraine in September. After a while in captivity he changed his mind and now wanted to fight for Ukraine rather than get sent back.

Then at some point in November he was captured again, but this time by Russians. The Wagner mercs got their hands on him and they were not kind to one of their own fighting for Ukraine so he had to be punished.

A video was released yesterday showing how Wagner punished him - they tied him to a wall and then used a sledgehammer to flatten his skull.

When asked about this video, the head of the Wagner group said he very much enjoyed it because it shows "a dog getting a dog's death".

Then today he changes his mind, he says he doesn't like the video anymore and the video was created by the CIA and not Wagner

Likewise you have Lavrov currently calling out the Western press for "honesty" while sitting out the back of a medical centre claiming it is a hotel and he hasn't been anywhere near a hospital...

Yet certain posters think it is possible to have a sincere negotiation process with these people...

(Mind you many Western politicians aren't exactly much better).
